Posted in the "Ask the tech"... and didnt get a response, so maybe more people will see it here. Installed a Model N Expo Kit in my base. Only one side of the expo kit works, I got the installation instructions from the internet and followed them to a T except for step 2 of the clarifier part I didnt get any kind of choke with my expo kit...What do I need and where can I find it???? also it calls for a Varactor diode where can I get one of these??? also I do not have any TX now...When I key up I can still hear the RX while I am keyed up. The PA works fine. so I know its not the mic. I desperately need HELP!!!!!
Thanks
Buck

he said the vco could be out of adjustment and the radio will not cover all the bands with out a fine tune.he said the sheet of paper that came with it has a phone number you can call for help.he said since parts were missing and you did not have instructions with it that is the best thing to do.

The choke and varactor are needed to complete the installation that will allow enough "swing" of the VCO to operate. The varactor and choke can be bought a Rad Shack..Also , the VCO will NOT lock IF the wires are two long and if they are NOT twisited together very tightly. An "N" kit requires a lot of alignment as well to "bring in" the extra channels...Just like the "A" kit...

Yes step 2 must be completed to get it to track tx,unless you have a continuous readout remote freq. counter, have a tech realign it,he may even have a choke that will work.

Buck,

If you have access to old junk radios you can look in Cobra and Uniden radios Uniden pc76 & 78 have the 2816 chip.

If you cannot find one and still want / Need one send me an e-mail.

Sounds to me like the choke and varactor are for the vxo (clarifier) mod not the vco operation. vco varactor mods do not involve chokes normally in my experience.
