Does anyone know of a decent indoor antenna for talking short distance and receiving?

I take it you mean for CB use.

Two choices....

Possibility one:
Make a dipole antenna out of small diameter magnet wire and hang it on the ceiling. Use colored or clear plastic push pins for support. Who looks at the ceiling anyway unless they change a light bulb. No one will notice if you run it along the ceiling wall corner.

Possibility two:

A loop antenna. Once again use small diameter magnet wire and plastic push pins for support. The length of the wire, in feet, is calculated as follows: 1005 divided by the frequency in mhz. The length of the wire is not super critical. Feed the loop with a quarter wave matching section and 50 ohm coax.

If you need the details on how to build either antenna just let me know and I will probably tell you more than you want to know. :-)

Don't tell DE, but you can use housewire or speaker wire. Two pieces about 102 or 103 inches long.

Cut the end off a jumper, slit the insulation on the outside about 1 inch. Unravel the braided wire that's wrapped around the core and twist it together. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation off of the core(be careful not to scratch the center conductor). Crimp, wirenut, or solder each peice of wire from the coax to a section of wire 102 inches long. Take the 2 leads you have now and tack or tape them to a wall up by the ceiling(as long as you don't have metal studs in the wall) stretched in opposite directions.

Hook the end of the cable with the connector up to the radio. CHECK SWR!!!!!!!!!!

If it is less than 2 to 1 on channel 20, it's OK but try to tune the antenna better for lengthy conversations.
