Having dropped my tower and killed my Alpha I have decided to upgrade to a beam. I need opinions on rotors I have been looking at the CDE HamIV-CD45II and the Yeasu 450&800 series. Anybody ever used the Yeasu's and liked it. I have seen or used the CDE rotors but I am always willing to try something else. I am only getting a small beam now but I'm getting a larger than necessary rotor so if I upgrade antennas later I don't have to upgrade rotors. Any advice is gratefully appreciated. |

You can't go wrong with the Ham-IV. Will turn about any beam you put on it.But they're pricey.You can get a good used one for around $ 250.

Re Taz...
Did you put a thrust bearing on the tower to take the weight off the rotator? All major antenna stacks require thrust bearings. |

DX431 Thanks, My Dad had a ham 4 on his old beam and it worked great but ,just for a try, and I'm looking to save a few bucks so I'm getting a Yaesu 450. I'm only getting a Signal Engineering Superhawk so it should be OK. Yeasu is a real good name for radios so I see no reason the rotors would not be as well. Taz if you are putting up a Laser 500 you are going to need a Tailtwister or one of the larger yaesu's for that. |

No, Im using an old excersize bike with some clothes line. and gear oil for athrust bearing |

Strange as it may sound, but if that is all you gave me (with perhaps a small welding unit) I could probably make a small thrust bearing. |

Taz back when i was your age we had the ARMSTRION rotor
You hooked a pipe rench to the pipe and turned the beam with your arm! |

I've known some guys in the past that had their homemade towers right next to their radio room, with a hand crank thur the wall, just cranked that bugger around until they got the best signal, plus a lot of trips out the door to see where it was pointing. |

has anyone of ya's tried converting the old bell rotors? had a freind that took one and added more bearings to it and he turned a six element without a problem... just wish he would not have sold it got a channel master special turning my raker 4 but once we got it straight it seems to do all right. |

123 i still use a tr-44 bell rotor right now im rebuilding it your right you can add bearings the big diffrence between it and the ham m was it does not have a machinal break. |
