Hello all,

Anyone here ever run into anyone that has done a really weird mod, or off the wall customization for their radio equipment?

This topic came to mind when I was thinking about a CB'er I used to know who designed microphones.

He used a telephone mouthpiece (as in the part you speak into) as an element in a microphone. The audio quality was excellant! I don't know how he did it, but it worked great!

Any other similar stories out there?

are you kidding? Being quite the experimenter, I:

Once installed a wireless mic system into(receiver actually inside the radio) a base radio so I could kick back and talk from anywhere in the house. I am still looking for one of those systems. Saw one on EBAY recently, but missed out.

Installed a UFO Digiscan in place of the clock/counter on a cobra 2000, using the clock set switches to run it. That was a hairy mess to fit in, but it did work and looked stock except for the digits were a bit larger in the window.

Took the guts out of a CPI speech processor and installed them into a Cobra 140GTL, along with a dual pot control so it could have Dynamike AND processor in one hole.

Took the guts out of a K40 speech processor mic and stuck it and the element into a D-104 That ROCKED!

Heck, modification is the crux of the biscuit, man!

I did a weird modification to my antenna system some years ago. Never did know if it talked or received any better .I went to the base of my base station antenna pole and measured off twenty five feet in a pyramid shape . At each point of the pyramid I dug a two foot deep hole and laid flat a used car radiator.I soddered copper ground wire to each radiator and connected it to the pole with ground clamps. On top of each radiator I poured twenty five pounds of rock salt.I stuck a twenty eight inch piece of two inch water pipe into each hole vertically and covered everything up.Then about every three days I would take a garden hose and fill the pipe up with water to make the rock salt activate.Did my equipment talk any better ? Some said it did ,some said it didn't.None of us will ever know for sure.

it damm sure was grounded though,it couldnt have hurt you so it had to help as it conditioned the "lossy ground" abit making for better
groundging and maybe better ground wave propagation.
