a quicker way to get the same results is to just clip r238 or to clip q32. gives same results with less effort.

ss8541 is right , Just cut R-238 and save the headaches. You will get the same results...

307 i take that you are talking about tr32? if you take it out you still need r238 back in board i think it's a 5.6k but taking out tr32 will change the tone to voice and it will also disable the alc on ssb you make your choice dingo!

i was the one who got off track. i think 307, read my post and i led him off also. the resistor to clip should be r249. and for the record, i do not recommend removing the limiter in any radio. i was just stating that this modification gives same results as removing the limiter, so if this is what you want, just clip the limiter.

the reason this mod gives same results as removing limiter is because the modulated audio(ac) on one side of the diode is referenced against a dc voltage on the other side. this 'clips' the audio off giving it a square wave effect on the negative peaks and gives so much audio on the positve peaks(becuase most people jack amc vr wide-open) that the positive peaks flattop also.

there is a way to do this with a diode/resistor combo where both sides of the diode are at audio voltages(ac). this eliminates the hard clipping and keeps your sinewave characteristics. as a result, you end up with a very clean signal(almost as clean as stock) but with increased positive modulation. it is very similiar to the npc mod, but has a few differences(like the amc stays in circuit where the npc calls for removing it). without a scope it can't be done properly, so once again if you do it, you will most likely be just as bad off as if you only cut r249 or removed tr32 in the 1st place.

and dingo you definitely need to replace r238. since you have r249 cut you might as well just remove the diode all together also.

246, Dingo was correct. REPLACE 238 with a 1n4001, banded end right. No cutting tr32, no cutting tr53. Easy way to allow radio to peak from any carrier and maintain audible clarity as long as carrier is above 1w.
