Does anyone on the forum own one of these amps?
I think they were made in 3,4,6,8,12 tubers. Are they good?? User friendly,...Easy to work on,.... availability of schematics? What kinda of wattage can you get? Just wondering b/c a local has one for sale.
Thanks

I think they are a fairly good amp to run.I've never heard of a 3 tuber though. You may mean a 2 tuber. However,it is 2 different version's of the Elkin. You have a standard 4,6,8,and 12 tube. Then you have a Super 4,6,8,and 12 tube. The difference is the Super Elkin's have a low and high power switch on them. The standard Elkin's do not.You have different tube variation's too. Some of the 2 tuber's have 6DQ6B tube's and some have 12DQ6B's.As far as the 4,6,8,and 12,i have seen those with either JAN-1625 or 12DQ6B's.These amp's do real good on AM but SSB dont hit on too much as far as i'm concerned.
They are pretty good for swing power.I use a 2 tube Elkin to drive a bigger amp i have now.As far as i know, there isnt a schematic diagram easily available for the Elkin's.If so,i've never seen one.I have took several close up picture's of the underside of a few Elkin's in good working order for troubleshooting purpose's though.
As for the wattage,i'd rather not comment on that. But with an Elkin of 4,6,8,or 12 tube's in good shape,i dont think you would be dissapointed.

Hey Fly,... Thanks
The Elkin box that I have seen has 6 tubes, 12DQ6B's, and the Hi/Lo switch so it must be the super model. It also has a low pass filter installed on the back of it which looks stock to me. Do you know the time frame when these were made?

Thanks

XLAXX,Some one must have put the low pass filter on it.I would suggest putting a small fan on it some where blowing across the tube's.A small whisper fan should do the trick. As fas as the time frame,i would say late 70's when or about they were originated.I do have some inside info on the Elkin amp's but will discuss that only through e-mail if you're interested.
Drop me a line if so at BrowningBar2@netscape.net

Fly-
Thanks, sent u an email. This one has a small fan mounted on the transformer angling down on tubes. Pretty cool looking amp though. I looked inside it and there was a piece of wood that was like a surface mount for some of the trans. and resists. very interesting. Not sure if it came this way or not?

The amps were originally made in N.C. they are truly vintage. In the early 90's they came out with an ELITE amp 6 tuber and 8 tuber. They had a super mod feature where it would actually key about 80 watts and swing 1KW. I havent seen them in a while.

I've talked to lots of people over the years that ran the Elkin amps, most of them were in NC, they were probably regionally used, kinda like the Maco's were so popular across the mid-south since they were made in Memphis. The Elkins I remember were loud on modulation, like the Varmints with the super-mod switch.
