At the onset let me state for the record that I am not attempting to knock Wal Mart. I am a Wal Mart a holic so to speak.

BUT just this past Saturday I was just looking at the rack of FRS and GMRS radios attempting to figure out how the designers could make the radios look even uglier--one looked like a piece of fruit of all things. Anyway this man and his wife started to look at the radios on the rack. He was confused and asked me, "do you know anything about these radios?" I gave him a brief and honest rundown of he merits of both FRS and GMRS. I informed them the ones with the NICAD and the chargers were better in the long run even if they costs more. When I told him that the GMRS required a $75 license fee well he suddenly grabbed the FRS radio (no license or license fee). He thanked me for saving him 75 bucks.

I mention this as I stated not to knock Wal Mart. They just hang up the packaging. BUT could these radio manufactureres at least put on the packaging in the same bold print that their name is printed "FCC License Required".

But the world is an imperfect place I guess.

GMRS IS LOST

The FCC will NEVER get control over it now.

Just my 2cents

Bruce,

Remember that in the GMRS service, you are allowed 50 watts and you may even install repeaters. Those people who install repeaters at their expense for their family communications don't appreciate all the Wal Mart radios interfering with their transmissions.

Aren't the GMRS repeater freqs above the range of the basic 15 and 22 channel GMRS cheapos? Especially after the offset.

I don't think the FCC cares much about FRS and GMRS. For instance, the FCC doesn't want tones to be transmitted on FRS then why did they certify rados that have that call button. You know that almost no one is going to speak into the mike after the tone to say who they are looking for.

I agree with you on the astetics. I hate those candy colored radios. The FCC can't blame the consumer for the mess that may result.

HONKEY TONK MAN : lol!!
yea i have a •••• load of frs radios
and a couple bubble pack gmrs radios
the gmrs radios i have go a little farther than the frs radios but modifying them is limited to cutting off the molded antenne and installing a bnc connector and maybe if you got a high quality radio you can adjust the modulation(deviation)
anyway Any body have fun on Christmas freakin out all the little kids with their new FRS radios??
hehe
