The project : Make a "super walkie-talkie" that is portable enough to actually carry around. Battery life for the amp has to last approx 1/2 of the battery life of the radio. No damage to any of the equipment is acceptable.
The materials that I have : Radio Shack TRC-241 handheld w/ rechargable NiMH battery pack, stock antenna, KL-40 amp, external speaker/mic for the handheld radio.
The help I need :
1) I need reccamendations for a 12 volt power source for the KL-40 that will be portable, not more than 3-4 pounds, rechargable, have a reasonable life, and somewhat readily available without digging into specialty stores. The handheld will continue to use it's NiMH rechargable pack that came with it.
2) I need feedback as to whether or not the stock "duckie" antenna is going to be able to handle the wattage, and if not, what would you suggest? A telescoping whip is out of the question, however, a "no ground-plane" antenna that I could carry in/sticking out of back pack is not unreasonable.
3) I need feedback as to whether it would be acceptable to run RG-58 with a BNC connection on one end (for the radio) to the KL-40, and then another with an opposing BNC end from the KL-40 to a ducky antenna (only if the ducky stays in the picture).
Yes, I realize that this setup won't have that great of a range, and I realize that many of you will think it's stupid, but it's simply a pet project to occupy some time while I sit at home the next week with absoluately nothing to do while on vacation! When I say I want portability, I am not expecting this to be something that I can hold in my hand while I talk - that's what the speaker/mic is for, but rather something I can stick in my back-pack or military style OD-Green "butt-pack" and have with me while walking, biking, hiking, whatever have you..

let me do a little research on it but I think I know where to get a battery pack that will work. It uses rechargable c or d batteries connected in series.....I have one for coon hunting and it will run a 16volt bulb for 6+ hrs on the bright side. Im not sure how many batteries it has in it but Id say around 12 because it puts out 18+ volts. Is say itll be easy to make. I will have to see how many amps it puts out and how many the klv-40 draws |

Based on the fuse that is in it, it draws no more than 5 amps at peak usage at 12 volts. |

Hmmm, that's not a bad idea! A little pricey for my tastes though, but it's an definately option! I am curious, what voltage and amperage are batteries for these competition R/C cars? Seems they would be more readily available at hobby shops.. Anyone know? |

Well after a little research I found that 707 has a better idea....The pack I have wont run the kl-40 very efficiently......check out www.allelectronics.com and look at catalog #GC-217
It is a 12v 17ah sealed battery that would work great....not a bad investment for $35. Also one of those portable jump starters would be perfect for this project.....You could run both the amp and radio off of one of those |
