Hello.
Id like to know if the new 2995 is capable of having the NPC/RC mods done to it since it has the new surface mount board in it. I talked to a CB shop owner and he told me there was absolutely nothing that could be done to it. Can you help me out? From what ive read up on you you seem to know a lot about these mods.

hey, sorry i missed this. actually i did see it, said to myself i would get back to it, and forgot. i have been very busy juggling several things here.

yes, the 2995dx and any other 29xxdx radio can have the npc/rc. the shop owner most likely told you that -nothing- can be done because he is umcomfortable working with smt's.

i think the npc/rc is trash, even though it is based on an old a.m. engineering(positive carrier shift) and ham(negative cycle compression) form of a.m. modulation. for one, it makes no sense to remove the limiter. the purpose of this modification is to increase positive modulation while keeping a clean signal(neg. peaks at 100% or less). removing the limiter completely voids the whole point of the mod. and volting the finals is also a wasted step. you may get another 5w that no one will ever see, while at the same time stressing the final/finals.

i have a limiter in tact, non-volted version that i call the ppe(positve peak exansion). i call it this to keep it from being confused with the npc/rc(there is a difference).

the problem here is that it is almost impossible to to tell you where to put the components(1 diode, 1 resistor) since the board is not marked. i have pictures i can send you, but i'll need an email address. you also have to keep in mind that it is very easy to damage the smt components and the pcb if you are not a good solderer with experience with smt's. it is best to pre-tin the components to be added and the components on the board. if you have liquid flux, this will make the process go faster, smoother, and less heat can be used. you can even use smt's for the modification but you'll need to scratch some of the covering off the copper to go this route.

the modification is also useless if you do not have a scope at the minimum. you might as well just reduce the carrier and jack amc wide-open.

sorry about the lecture but i don't like telling anyone how to do something without also giving a little background on the hows, whys, and pros and cons.
