Hello,
I am thinking about trading a friend a old computer that I do not use for a 350. He claims that the amp puts out 600-900 watts. I asked my smart friend GTO and he said that he is making up those numbers that the amp might do 400 if the tubes are good. Does anybody know the output on the Palomar?
THANKS,
COBRA

600 to 900 is about right under ideal conditions.

This amp will do about 375 watts if the tubes are REALLY good, otherwise about 325-350 watts. These are good amps though, hard to destroy !

When I spot one of these on a flea-market table at a hamfest, I ask "What kind of fire extinguisher comes with that?" Some of them get the joke and chuckle. Mostly I get dirty looks in response. It's a flamethrower. Period. This thing was introduced just as Palomar Electronics of Escondido, CA was circling the bowl. They went under forever soon after. For years I speculated that the smart rats jump a sinking ship first, and that the folks whose designs made Palomar famous were already gone. Made me wonder if the janitor volunteered to design it, and got the job because he hadn't quit, yet.

Unless someone has corrected several design flaws, you will be disappointed with tube life, performance, how hot it gets on standby, failing 25-year old filter capacitors, scratchy intermittent relays and a tendency to torch the "bias adjust" trimmer controls underneath. Once THAT happens, the next set of tubes will last one or two keys, max before they cherry up and go "SNAP, POW!".

Kinda reminds me of numerous basement and garage-built "home-brew" amplifiers I have seen. The cabinet looks nicer, though.
