Hello Team,I use USB most of the time. When I first got started on CB,in the late 70s, we were only permitted 11 channels 2watts on AM only,no beams, no sideband all on 26Mhz.We now have 40 channels on 26Mhz,AM and SSB plus beams are legal.

When I am looking for some DX, SSB is the only way to fly. I have used FM, which is a great sound, but no locals have it at this time. AM is where I hang out at night. I have a local crowd on 40. Most have SSB, but don't like it. I would more then happy to run SSB all the time. But what fun is that, when the skip is gone?! *G* So AM for locals, and SSB for the DX.

Im with alsworld, I use ssb during the day mostly at home and AM at night. "Mobile" AM same radio but use AM mostly even to DX. I have neighbors so no amp on AM in the house only on ssb keeps them wondering...

Well my way guys, i use sideband for the long ditant communications, from base to mobile. Alot of people don't know, that when it comes to talking local, ssb goes alot farther..

I use SSB almost exclusively. I own two cb radios that are SSB only. I used to like AM until it became the "LOUD" mode. You see, AGC doesn't work on AM like on SSB, so if you are talking to one guy with a normal radio and another guy with a "peaked" radio, there is a huge discrepancy in audio level between the two. This is annoying to me. FM is really my favorite for local chatter, but alas, it is not legal here.

Sideband 107% of the time.

AM mode had a bad stigma attached to it, from the CB craze in the 70s.

When I found out about 11 meter SSB, this was what I was looking for. People talking like regular folks, 'cause I'm just a regular folk.

I use to run SSB 99% of the time When I lived near Hot Springs Ar But when I moved down south about 75 miles it's mostly AM here.So I would say SSB 60% for DX and AM 40% local,I don,t even try DX on AM anymore.Stepchild

Hey Fishandstitch,
Is there a "channel guide" to SSB calling channels? I know, for example many folks DX in 27.385 LSB. I occasionally will catch someone on 36, 37 or 39, but always LSB. What channels on USB are used?
Thanks,
Barracuda

There is nothing better in my opinion than SSB. i spend all my free time there! There is nothing like makeing a long distance contact accross the U.S. or around the world! AM in my neck of the woods is nothig but a mess!

SSB ....... In NOT the best mode! CW is CW can be used with bandwidth in the 50 hz range a 40/1 DECREASE over SSB! The noise floor can aproach -140 DBM ! (about .05 UV ) Weak signal modes like MOONBOUNCE all use CW SSB would not even work ... EXCEPT for very high gain antennas like the one

at http://www.df6na.de/~df6na/img/W5UN_2.JPG

your SSB signal would not even be heard ! Yep SSB is ok but their are other modes far beter! And as for AM Lissen between 20.01 and 29.190 some realy NICE sounding AM stations up their! As for me i run FM first and SSB last ..... just my bag ....

Question from a rookie....What distance should I reasonably expect when operating in SSB? This is assuming it's not skip and using a radio like Delta Force or Galaxy 99.
