Dx431,

here is an opinion, although not really very technical.

I run the Lincoln (older style, non MRF455). AM is no problem with either style as they both maintain variable power (AM, not sure about FM). Now with sideband may be the question. Mine peaks 28-30 watts on SSB, but when I read RMS (based on a long aaauuuuuudddioooo), much less. I run a KLV 351 two pill mobile on a power supply as a base.

If you are looking for getting out, well I think the choice you said would be superb! My only concern is the wattage output of your radio on SSB, especially if your Lincoln has the MRF455 pill inside. I will let the Techs answer on whether it might be too much driving it. I don't know.

As you already know, the Lincoln is a sweet talking radio, and the KLV amps are awesome! But being the variable power on the Lincoln is not applicable to SSB, I wonder if it might be to much? I don't know that answer, but would suspect being there is no deadkey on SSB, it "might" be okay, I just don't know

C'mon Techs, please tell me if I'm right or wrong as I have wondered this myself as I ponder another (new) Lincoln purchase.

Sorry Dx431, I probably didn't help you unless the techs set me straight. All I can say is with my smaller amp, it's a talker for sure. The sound of a Lincoln with any KLV is awesome.

I am currently running a new (455 final) Lincoln and KLV550 with great results. The SSB power is a bit much, but I use a Turner +3b and use the mic gain to keep things (input power) in check. So far it has served me well, no complaints and the KLV550 is a bargain if you win one off Copper Auction!

DX 431 I really can't help in this manner except I realixe the klv 550 is a great amp, Alsworld tried repeated times to talk me into buying one, I use a Palomar Skipper 250 base amp and on ssb set it for 10 watts pep power, it can take up to 15pep,
The klv 550 is a great amp, Write Taz on this also.

Dx431,don't do it,the klv-550 I have is a 2-pill unit it has 2 sd1407 pills,rf-parts shows an avg.output of each as 100 watts they'll do a helluva lot more than that, driven by a peaked 142gtl(one 1969 final)600 watts ssb.I don't know if they use padding resistors on the input or not,but at any rate the pills are rated at only 3 watts input each(16db gain),I think this classifies this amp as a low drive unit, the old pills in the earlier units were mrf422s rated at 15 watts input each (high drive?)The previous statement is an assumption only.Try a klv-1000p I think you'll be happier.

I,m running a new lincoln peaked out. My preliminary look at power out indicated 19.2 on am just for a quick check. My home brew SWR/PWR meter wont read ssb. I never dared try. It does not have a variable RF on SSB but their may be a mod for it. But I think you can detune and use the KL550 with no problems.
If anyone has a ball park on what this unit peaks out at on ssb it would be nice to know.

The klv550 is the perfect amp for single final radios, just buy the radio hook up the amp voila 600 watts,no screwin' around with internal controls, besides why did we buy those dual-final;mega-final radios,POWER!,I for one will save my pennys for a klv 1000p,read my previous post,I'm not tellin you what to do,just my opinion, please take no offense.
