I recently traded in my Peterbuilt 379 on a new Volvo 770, my pete was all metal and the volvo is fiberglass and my radio has suffered because of it, someone told me it was because I no longer have a groundplane, I've got a rci 2970dx and a wilson 5000 with an 18 inch extention to raise the load as high as I can, the swr is about 1.3, and my wattage has gone from 55 sw. 175 to 50 sw. 90, how can I remedy the groundplane problem and is there a better antenna to use? thx "doboy 426".

Correct lack of a ground plane will hurt there are antennas that do not require a groundplane or you might try running a wire from the ground side of the mount to the frame of the truck

I ran a wire from one antenna mount to the other( on the mirrors)....Right over the cab!

Helped a little. If ya always haul the same trailer mount the antenna on the side of the reefer :)

Those are good antenna's you might try to mount it behind the cab and use the trailer as a groundplane but then your talking out the rear end literally. Just make sure and get a good ground and give it a try.

DoBoy, what you need is a no-ground antenna like they use on fiberglass boats.does the same on fiberglass rigs as they do on boats, think about it.

DoBoy,

Mount your antenna on the passenger side. Run a 10 ga. wire from antenna mount to the inside hinge bolt. If there is an external mirror mount bolt. Run the wire from the mount to that bolt. On the inside run a 10 ga. wire from the inside mirror mount bolt to a metal dash mount. This will complete the ground to the vehicle frame and also include the engine as part of the counter poise. This will put the SWRs where they belong as well as give you the TX and RX you are looking for. That worked for me.
