I am looking for a cb radio for my son (a truck driver)but have not used a cb in years. I am not sure what I am looking for. He has mentioned Galaxy and General Lee. What does "changed over" mean? What is the difference between CB and 10 meter? Thanks for your time. |

Galaxy is a brand of radio and known for high quality. The General Lee is a model of radio and a fine choice for a truck installation! Your son has good taste in radios. 'Changed Over' usually refers to an illegal modification performed on a CB radio which enables it to operate outside of the normal 40 channel range. CB and 10 meter are a little like apples and oranges. CB is a license free radio service which is very commonly used by truck drivers to keep in touch on the road. 10 meters is an HF amateur radio band which requires a license to use. |

Tech 833 I think the change over refered to is changing a 10 meter radio for use on 11 meters thus making it CB campatable. I agree on apples and oranges. Just thought that needed clarification. Thanks for your input |

Re Ronko.... A CB and a 10 meter radio are two entirely different radios intended/authorized for use on two entirely different band of frequencies. CB Servise uses only the 27 Mhz band. 10 Meters is a band, one of many, used by Ham Radio operators and uses frequencies in the 28 Mhz band. The tech was correct when he stated that you have to have a ham radio license in order to use the 10 Meter Radio per the current FCC rules and regs. |

Thanks for the help y'all!!! He has not mentioned ssb but I am sure he would enjoy having it. After looking around a bit I found another term that I am not sure how to relate to CB radios..."export". Does this mean that the radios are for export only? Are they not legal in the US? The "changed over" reference was to a used radio I saw that advertised as "already changed over". I am assuming that the General Lee is CB and not 10 meter and that Galaxy makes 10 meter and CB. Thanks again....great forum. |

Well export means it was made for export, usually easy to modify. 10 meter radios are usually easy too. The trick is to pick which one your looking at we will give the pro's and con's of each sound good. I myself own a voyage vr 9000 a uniden 2510 both 10m radio's and easy to convert or "change over". Pick your poison! Galaxy is a good line also, never owned one but converted many for drivers. Who knows you might get the bug back. |

The term 'export' is used to describe radios intended for the 10 meter amateur band, but can be modified to illegally operate on the CB band. This is not legal in the U.S. or most other countries in the world. However, it happens all the time. The General Lee is a legal CB radio. It is still a good choice. Galaxy makes CB and 10 meter 'export' radios. It is very common for the 10 meter radios to be illegally modified and used on CB. |
