These antennas used in competetion shoot-outs look like fat 102 inch whips. Are they made of fiberglass or steel?? are their better Than the big open coil antennas? Can you shoot skip with fighting-sticks? How much power can they handle? Are some of these sticks actually 12 feet high?

yes:most are 102" some differ. no:most are aluminum. better?:the main reason they use them because the thickness of the metal does no wavier in the wind like the whips.(and you know people think bigger is better)the claim is that flat coils are better for distance without skip conditions.and that round coils are better for skip conditions.bruce and marconi can explain if that if that is so or not.operators use the "sticks like two element vert.beams(radiater and back door rejection. yes they will talk skip, but you cant ride around with them."ghost rider"in fla.runs 15 to 20,000 watts through his on ac alternators.and sometimes he still gets beat(so you can only guess what the winner was running(ha!!ha!!extreme cb 10 or more alternators)those guys do like nascar they put the trucks on trailers and transport them to the shootout, them they put them back on and bring them back. hope this helps !! sixkiller 505 love country

So, let me get this straight. As you explained this, and as I now understand this, fighting sticks basically will make a mobile function as a base station on wheels. the more sticks that are employed, the more the vehicle will act like a kind of yagi beam with directors and a reflector, for a more front to back ratio, tighter lobe or transmit pattern toward the front of the vehicle. But you can't drive the vehicle around with this set-up, it's meant to stay stationary while transmitting. Are these fighting sticks flexible?? And do the height of the sticks increase gain over single or dual coiled antennas??.

20,000 watts that close to your head is likely to have bad effects on the human body. I have personally seen a CBer with a small block Chevy V8 engine in the back of his Van spinning 10 alternators producing A/C current for his 60,000 watt amp. I'm surprised all that RF doesn't blind him. More money than brains.

wolverine:well since most coil type antennas if uncoiled were designed to be 1/4-1/2 or 5/8 in wave length, then some of the coil types would be in the neigborhood in length of the fighting sticks(if uncoiled and laying side by side with the fighting sticks)if the coil antennas are set up right and tuned and grounded right and last but not least, the coax is the right length,(the back door length is different from the radiator)it will out perform the sticks.(most shoot outs are on flat land anyway)since i used the imfomation that bruce sent me,my coils have worked better than i could have dreamed.i took a 1500.00 prize this winter.my 10 pill against an 16 pill,as bruce always says: less power BETTER ANTENNA!! i can send you the imfo he sent me if you like(e-mail me check my pofile)

hey sparkomatic!! i lost a friend about 2yrs ago,he was in the coast guard, his mos (job) was communications(he started going blind for no reason)they ret. him.with all the time on his hands he upgraded his base station to a 10,000 watt and his mobiles to 5000.00 and 8000,00 watts soon after that he went total blind and developed a rare blood condition his doctors also could not explain.he didnt live long after that.(things that make you go hummmm)

MPE is the FCC's way of determining the safe distance from a given transmitting antenna at a specified power input and antenna gain. In the best of installations a 100 watt mobile on channel 19 cb would create a MPE (maximum permissible exposure) distance of 6 feet. That's barely the distance from the average driver seaat to the back bumper.

So:
Imagine a 1000 watt system...Maximum safe distance? 19 feet
Imagine a 5000 watt system...Maximum safe distance? 43 feet
Imagine a 10000 watt system...Maximum safe distance? 60 feet
Imagine a 20000 watt system...Maximum safe distance? 85 feet

remember that's in the best of "controlled conditions"...add the effects of the car body, etc. and the maximum premissible (safe) distance for 20,000 watts grows to 190 feet.

Now imagine an egg in a frying pan on High...thats your body when you're near one of these high powered systems!!! You decide.

Jeeeeeesuuss!!! $1500.00 in a shoot-out?? What's the cash pot for a 24, 32, or 48 pill contest?? I gather DC or AC sky winners must win a $5000.00 "Booty". Does the winner break even?, or does his investment in his equipment out weigh the money won??. And SixKiller,as far as your friend, he must have suffered from "Macular Degeneration". That usually happens if someone is exposed to, too much RF, X-rays, Ultra-violet, you know what I mean. Remember the TV show, "The incredible Hulk", he suffered from a rare blood condition also. "Gamma Ray" irradiated blood!!

I got photo's of that motor in the back running the AC altenators. The sky's the limit as ear plugger say's. All you will ever need is a 16 pill and a good antenna but be carefull cause some 12 pill might eat you up. that eye thing aint funny its been happening to me, I was 20/400 last eye appointment corrected to 20/25.

These guys running THAT much power have got to be brain dead !!!! And if they are not, then they still are !!!! These guys will learn the hard way, they are relatively young now,but wait till they get older and have ALL sorts of problems with their organs, brain, etc. What I don't understand is the point ?? I could see if the prizes were $50,000 or maybe $100,000 at a time, then there is a way to do this so you would not get in the way of so much rf, like locating the vehicle some distance away and controling the key down by radio control{although that much rf could make radio control hard}.Anyway my point is still, what is the point of these contests and is it worth loosing years of your life over it ???? Like I said,BRAIN DEAD !!!

Czar, The only way they will see the danger of excessive RF, is to see fast and immediate results. Like watching your hair fall out in patches. ALA "Chemotherapy".

Hey SIX KILLER you say you are beating sticks w/ur coils. That is good for you , but these sticks are in what state of tune. Are you working compariable watts.? If you are I would like to invite you to TEXAS and fight our mudduck mobiles and their fighting sticks. I have personally tested with 2 trucks w/racks running multiple antennas. Both trucks within 50bird watts of each other. As for the sate of tune of boths systems tuned for max performance pre our MFJ259B we also swept both trucks coax for reflect. Point being the sticks cut the coils off!!!

man i would love to come to tex!! always been my dream to come where i got my inpiraion for radio in the first place.two of my idoils of the day were doctor jekkle and dangerous 95.(might be before your time i'am 53yrs.young)they would talk to the east coast like they owned it.on my end big boys like "555 (choo choo)!!and "top cat"would repond with the same kind of audio.those were the days when operators would stand by and wait there turn to try their luck as well.(not like now).my coil sticks were designed by a young man called "13"and tune by the infomation i got from bruce here on this forum .(sort of young men for war and old men for council type thing) you can walk around the back of my mobile with a field test meter and be amazed at what does'nt come out of the back door.(by the way also tuned with a mfj259b)they sort of remind you of davemade coils but mind are center loaded.my oldest daughter lives in corpris cove tex. got to get there to key with you guys real soon!!but there"s always a standing invite to come here, there's plenty prey here for you too. (maybe i'll see you at the watergate keydown sept 12 thru the 14th.) peace!! bobby sixkiller 505 love country

IMHO past 500 watts in a car to an antenna with a coil turns those antennas into a dummy load. Watts are nothing without an antenna. Heck, you could talk through a sewer lid with 10000 watts and win a splatter contest.
