I'm contemplating replacing my Wilson center load 5000 trucker for the Baby 55 coil Ant. I've been hearing that 55's will give the preadator, and fighting sticks a "Run for their money" if not beat them outright on occasion. Does anyone out have experience with this antenna? And what is the maximum wattage that it will take? I use a tri-pod roof-top set-up, and I was told that the 8" shaft would be best for my application as opposed to the longer R4 and R5 versions of the 55 coil antennas. Thanks in advance. |

If you're not going to run at least 10,000 watts, don't worry about it. Wildbill |

Wolverine, I read where the R4 and R5 can handle 25K watts. Maybe the baby may take a little less (? I do not know if that is factual, just a guess), but even if cut in half, over 12K ain't so bad At that range, mounts and coax become the factor. My guess is unless you're into serious competition and keydowns, it can handle whatever you throw at it. Alsworld |

Actually Alsworld, most CBers state, That open coils recieve, and transmit better, and don't heat up (lost effieciency) as much as closed coil wilson antennas. But I was also informed that the shaft should be 12" above the roof to maximixe the groundplane effect in launching the signal for DXing. I want the Baby 55 only for the purpose of minimizing "Windloading" at speed using a mag-mount, because of the bigger coil. Will the short 8" shaft affect my groundplane as opposed to the 12" shaft????? |

Wolverine, I do not know. I have received a Monkey Made MM5 this week I'll be playing with, mounted on a tri-mag mount (hopefully that will come in today). I will eventually test it against a K40 and maybe a 102" whip if I have some extra time (which it's pretty tight now). The Monkey Made coils are 4" diameter, 5 coils, sitting approximately 12" above the roof. It will sit on top of my 4X4 Chevy Silverado. I don't know when I can do this test but would like to perform it locally on a quiet night. I have two friends with base stations that live fairly close that can give me solid readings from the mobil antennas and are willing to help me perform this test. I may recruit someone else from a different location as well. As for DX'ing, I guess I have no way to test it out there. Conditions factor in so much. I realize this is not an antenna testing range, but it seems if I come up with a viable plan under real world conditions, I may learn something on the value of these big coil antennas. I'll be curious if I notice any difference between the whip and the coil while sitting still. I'm even considering facing four directions with each antenna seeing how directional it is (or how it's mounted on my vehicle affects performance). Should be interesting. Wolverine, I guess I wrote a book to say "I don't know the answer to your question". Alsworld |

Anyone?? Will shaft lengths affect my SWR? 8", or 12" shafts. Or will it even make a difference? |

With a 55 it should make no difference. The antenna power handling shouldn't be a concern. What the tripod and coax can handle will become a factor before the antenna. |

What would be the maximum wattage that the coax on a 3-pad magnet mount will take?? rms/peak? |

Scratch that last question. I asked and it was answered in the ask the tech section. |
