Ok I have a question that is kinda plauging me....I know that I have been told if you cut the mod. limiter you get splatter which causes problems up and down the band and more. I was looking online and found a palomar modulator which says it will dead key X and sing to many times that. My question is wouldn't that also cause problems? This is kinda a two part question if you cut the mod limiter and change some parts is it possible to have a radio that has alot of swing and sounds good with no splatter?
Thank you for your time

Here's from my experience on this. I guess it depends on quite a few things like antenna height, any tvi filters in line, what kind of antenna etc. Anytime you cut a limiter, "yes", you do tend to bleed over other electronics as well as splatter on other channels. Now, with running a modulator amp, that pretty much is all forward swing thus making your radio walk the dog. I would suggest to NOT cut the limiter and see what happens after you run the linear. If you do not splatter and/or bleed too much, solder out the limiter(just in case you need to throw it back in) and see what happens. If it gets worse, throw a tvi filter in line and if all fails, throw the limiter back in. Let me know how it works out for you because I have ran into several problems with these kind of issues in the past.

Well there are several reason I am asking this question actually. I took my radio to a guy that was supposed to be the best around at tuning a radio, he said that he trained with a guy that helped desing (sp) the connex board and seeing as I have a connex I figured hey what the heck, and any way when I got it back he said that he switched a few things on it and it sounds great the talk back works better it recievs better and it talks great but it swings a ton still sounds good though with out distortion, I was using a power mike and while sitting in the drive way there was someone talking on my cordless phone that said she could hear me like I was right next to her on the phone, I switched mikes to a noise cancelling and it doesn't seem to do it any more, but I was still wondering if I might be screwing up other peoples stuff or walking on somoeone way down or up the band. I am kinda new at all this so I figured I would ask. Thank you again for your time.

By cutting the limiter, it causes overmodulation, which causes all kinds of splatter havoc for those around you. Install an amp and it just amplifies all the hash and trash.

If you are going to use an amp, please don't cut the limter for the sake of those on the receiving end, or around the various adjacent channels. Gosh, if you want to be louder, just add a power mic. Tech833 described how a power mic in combination with an INTACT limiter almost acts like a speech compressor (to an extent) when the limiter is working hard. That is a good thing without throwing out so many "extra" emmisions.

Just my thoughts.

Just get a compression power mike and leave the limmiter in and really drive that little sucker hard,it can really increase your avg. power on ssb.but thats what you want bring your avg.power closer to your peak.

Clifforion,

Your experience of interfering with cordless phone operation is a prime example of how modifications such a defeating a modulation limiter cause trouble.

As you noted, your radio appeared to operate well when monitored on channel. It's what happens off channel and out of band that indicate your radio is misadjusted and overmodulated.

Because of the potential for causing problems both inside and outside of the CB band, it is better to keep modulation limiting circuitry intact and properly adjusted.

regards,

Bob
