Good evening guys.

I ran across an article which we all might benefit from. It was an alternative way to attach a coax connector to the Mini 8 coax.

So here goes and I hope that I do not confuse you.

Using a file securely hold the reducer for the Mini 8 and file down the internal rim edge so as to remove the plating leaving base meteal below it showing. But just on the inner rim edge. Insert the mini 8 as usual and cut and trim as normal. Slide the adaptor up to the base of the braid. NOW comes the trick. DO NOT peal the braid back but rather spread it out. Using a heavy duty soldering Iron (note I mention HEAVY DUTY) very quickly solder the shield directly to the rim you recently filed clean. Remember use a heavy duty soldering iron so you can solder fast and avoid melting the insulation between the shield and the center conductor. Do not use an excessive amout of solder. Keep the solder job neat.

Once you have soldered the shield to the rim just trim away the excess and assemble the the remainder of the connector as normal. The adaptor will now provide a firm and positive contact for the shielding.

Before I leave one trick that I use on all coax connectors. The standard connector has 4 small holes used to solder the braid. Here is my personal trick. I take drill bit larger than the hole and enlarge one or two holes to 1 1/2 their size (most of the time just one). Using a larger hole and by filing down the edges of the hole to the base copper metal I can even using a whimpey soldering iron get at least a half decent soldering job done to the shielding.

Remember never do what I did once--picked up the working end of a fully heated soldering iron by mistake with my bare fingers. It hurts both the fingers and the pride :-O :-) And a very serious burn will result.

Later

Re Hootie....

Naaaa it was not that hot. It just did not take me long to look at the soldering iron. ;-)

I fold back the braid and use silver or gold plated connectors solders much quicker than nickel, copper or brass.oh a 100watt soldergun is a must, use a standard silver connector with rg8 and you don't have to drill the holes, grabs that solder quick.
