Sorry, but 27 to 50 Mhz is just too far to jump.

However our good friends at copper does sell a 6 M radio----

Yes it has been done and several articels have been printed in 73AR in the 70s and 80s. All where based on PL-02A chassis. I have a VK ham who had one and it worked great. I have even seen one modified to 430MHz.

YES it can be done but it a hole lot better to just go get a ranger 5054 i converted a hygain years ago a lot of work for little gain

i'm also intersted in which radios this could be done to, degree of difficulty etc. as far as i know it can only be done with the pl-o2a.

Most of the mods use the old HY-Gain board with the pl-02a. I tried this mod before, I did get it to work but it was a pain to do. To much time and trouble. But hey take a shot at it, if you have a spare radio laying around! Good luck

DONT DO IT !!!!!!!

1) am is almost dead on 6 meters except on 50.4

2) SSB will require tight frequency control unlikely with a converted cb set

3) frount end gain on a cb set would be down at least 3 db so at best a .5 UV set is going to be .75UV

4) COST and TIME i spent several days with a pace desoldering station and cost of new crystals ect ill bet now it would cost at least 30 bucks just in parts and the rewireing of a hygain is tricky at best.

buy the ranger you will not regret it

YES TENTEC makes one 600 bucks but icom yasue kenwood all make 160-6 and even 440 radios for 700-1000 dollars these are all modes now there are lots of 400/2 meter and even 6/2/400 sets out there mostly handhelds but mobles too dont buy the ft-100 the 100d is ok

I have built many tentec kits they are very good but the ranger 5054 is a better buy

i've been looking at the ranger but undecided on whether i want to get an all mode 6 meter or an all mode 2 meter. any suggestions for a meager budget as far as 2 meter all modes or six meters all modes??

2 meter all modes can be solved by buying the tentec 10 to 2 meter transverter and using your export radio to drive it other wise i do not recomend buying a 2 meter all mode since they run 500 bucks for a few hunderd more you go all band now as for meager budget i would buy the ranger for 6 as your all mode IF you want 6 and a 2 meter handheld like the icom ic-2 sportster for 100 bucks or ic- 7 dualbander about 200 or for more power i like the alinco 2 meter radios as far as 10-50 watt units for about 200 bucks my station i have a vx-5 HT to goes 6, 2 and 440 fm about 300 bucks very nice.

Dont belive it. My parents had a dog (died of old age at 15yrs) who constantly chewed up live 240VAC power cords - never made a sound as he did it.

znut is right if you want 6 and want to pay under 600 bucks the ranger 5054 is the BEST radio out their! and you hearing this from a guy who has worked the band for almost 40 years! next best bet a alinco dx 70 at 750 bucks and then their are the big boys ( DC to DAYLIGHT ) radios starting at 800 bucks! if your a FM-A.HOLIC like me the 8900 is a choice but NOT a good one too much money.

ok ok the 5054dx it is, just going to be a while. currently i have pretty good local coverage on 2 meters, was interested in 2 meter ssb, but doesnt seem to be much 2 meter activity other than fm on the area repeaters.

good choice i worked 2 meter SSB 33 years ago its a hit and miss thing you will not regret the 5054 ranger did their homework ..... and comming from me ..... everyone knows im not a ranger fan .... its a very good radio i lent mine out and the guy BOUGHT it off me!

FT8900 is a good deal for what you get. It just does not have SSB. but it does have....

10,6,2,70cm(440) band.
Crossband repeat
50 watts on 10,6,and 2

Detachable remote head.
800 memories
Very fast scan.

ETC...

It really all depends what you are looking for. For 100 dollars difference, to get a 4 band dual receive radio is a steal!!!!! Especially since it has 10 meter FM!!!!!!

Did I say 50 watts?

The ranger is a good all mode 6meter radio. However it doesnt not have the features of an FM radio. All depends on what you are looking for. But I would not cut the FT8900 totally down. Worked lots of 6 meter FM out west.

wate till it opens it will sound like ch 19! right now even 10 meters is dead. ive been on 6 for 40 years and when its closed its closed when it opens all hell breaks lose!....enjoy the ride lissen on wends on 52.02 at 730pm eastern time for the tampabay net i heard 35 checkins average for months now.

Over the past 5 weeks I have heard more DX stations and made more DX contacts on 6 than the entire rest of the time I have had my callsign. The strange part is 90% of them have been in the area of TX, OK, AR, NM, and such. I think it is true single hop skip. Until now my DX experience on 6 has been sporadic E from the north and mid sections of the US.

to mikefromms... there are 2 6 meter repeaters in north ALABAMA you might try...53.31 ana 53.33 31 is between Decatur and florencve and 33 is at Cullman....also try 50.150 every night around 9 pm, alabama 6 meter net is there with checkins from miss....georgia...lots from tennessee & north carolina stations too...personally I have no 6 meter eq. but that can change...I USED to own a ft - 100 d in the house, wuth a 3 element 6 meter cushcraft beam ( dern sorry pl-259 connector on that antenna ........also there was a 6 meter net from MEMPHIS, but i dont remember the freq. but i think it was SUNDAY nights around 8 ........ especially where the gamma match attached to it, one itty - bitty nut held the whole gamma match together....but now all I do is H F ( usually 80 meters and 20 meters )...tried the NEW 60 meter band this morning, ( so - so ...after the new wears off, it will be better for rag - chewing )..
