I use murs almost every day. I talk to my "better half" as she is on her way home from work. I do a lot of base to mobile work with a range of up to 15 miles at times, generally up to 8 or 9 miles reliably. Mobile to mobile I get about 4 to 5 miles. I am using the 2 channel Radio shack mobile units. I had to have them set at 2 watts (what your allowed) because when I got them , they put out less than a watt. For a base antenna I am using an antenna from Hustler called a GC-144. It's a 2 meter mobile antenna that offers about 5.5 db gain. I had to trim it of course. I mounted it on a ground plane that I made myself from a cb antenna bracket that accomodates a 3/8 - 24 thread. It works excellent at only 18 feet above ground ! For the mobile, I use another 2 meter ham antenna, it's made by Larsen, the NMO 150-C a 5/8 wave on an nmo type mag mount. I trimmed it down and it works great ! I would HIGHLY recommend MURS to anyone, I am suprised that the MURS channels are still very empty. It would be nice if we could find someone out there to talk to on the weekends or something !

Hello Bruce, I can't do email. I'm on a computer at work and I don't think it will allow me to. But I would be glad to communicate here with you. I can check this board during lunch or early morning.

I wouldn't know if there is a service manual available but you could ask a rad shack person. After all, you've got questions , they've got -well something... Anyways, that radio at $29.99 is a great deal ! It does the job once you set it to 2 watts output. Both units that I purchased wher transmitting less than a watt. I think that the recieve on the radio is a bit below par but hey , the price is right ! Your best bet for a good quality radio is to look at some comercial land mobile equipment. Vertex/Standard has an HT that is MURS compliant. No doubt that it has real good recieve specs. There may be others as well. I think murs is great and I can't wait for it to become more popular !

Elmer Fudd, how do you set the radio to do the higher power on the MURS band? The Manual states that power is limited on the "dot" frequencies, but I dont't see where to change it.

The blue object on the circuit board would be a logical choice. Live long and prosper.

just worked one of our group....mostly non hams... using the radios at 1 watt using a 5/8 wave on the car and a 5/8 wave at 30 foot at his house we worked 10 miles! Yep the FCC has a winner in MURS!

Yes , Spock is correct,(what else is new)! My radio tech friend says the blue thing is for watts. There is also an adjustment for modulation. not blue however.

The power adjust is the blue pot closes to the antenna conector. As for deviation remember the FCC limits that so dont be so quick to crank it up. Also they use a condenser mike so a direct swap can be done but you would have to adapt what ever your were using We have found no lack of audio in any of the 12 radios i bought but the tone squelch is a bit tuchy. I have the service manual from radio shack it also shows how to program the radio from 151-159mhz .... if you have a need to do so. And remember the key word ANTENNAS if you skimp you lose.

My manual says that the power is limited only on the actual MURS frequencies...Anyone verified this, or are they all the same level based on the adjustment of the blue pot?

thanks bruce!much apreciated.i have to agree
w/ya about the tone-squelch;what a joke!even w/
some of us as close as 1/4 mile, the tone squelch
is an absolute joke!very dissappointed to say the
least.also, the switch in the mic is terrible.
why would they use a tact switch for these???
el-cheapo i reckon!!save some money.but hey,
for $30,who can complain! anyways, thanks again.
