Hello all,
Can someone tell me if it's OK to drive a kl-203 amp with 4watts on AM and 12 ssb?
Some of the stuff I've read on the forums suggest that something more like 1w AM is better.
I'm asking because I'd have to adjust my radio (inside) to lower the dead key, but that would mean have ing to use the amp all the time. I only wanted to use it to dx on ssb.
Thanks

2-2.5w is best AM carrier input to the 203. this gives 20-40w carrier out with 100-150 pep out.
4w carrier in would bump it up to 60+ carrier out and on a rms meter it will back up under modulation, not good.
The difference in 2w and 4w on your radio alone should be minute as your "talk" power should be almost the same.

Tech671,
Thank you for the imformation.
Two additional questions if you please, Will the SSB power follow the AM or do I have to make an additional adjustment (Galaxy dx959, previously peaked)and if so to how many watts and could you recommend a mobil power meter that I can use for both AM and SSB?

Thanks.

Good rule to use for amps is the 1 to 4 ratio. Have an amp say key up 200 watts and have it swing to 800..

The 959 usually gives around 18-20w ssb which is fine for the 203.
Copper sells the "Synchron" power meter for $30, good avg reading meter for the money.

A Lurker,

Why are you turning the power down INTERNALLY on a Galaxy DX959 for amp use?

I own one too and they have a rf power knob right on the front of the radio.

That way you can turn it down when using the amp and then crank it back up when not using the amp.
