What do you all think of using a mobile radio for a base setup? I have an extra radio and wanting to setup a base station but really dont want to buy an expensive base radio. Will a mobile work? And what advantages does a real base radio have over a mobile in this setup? I hear alot of bases have the same board as mobiles. Thanks for your replys.

Smokestack,

I have used Mobiles for bases for many years with NO Problems.

I also have a TR-121CP (set at 2 watts) & 2970DX both hooked up all the time on the bench to Check & Test Amps when they are brought in for testing or service.

Makes things a lot easier.

99.9 percent of the people cannot tell the difference.

YES they will work!

A Good Mobile with a Good Power Supply will give you everything a Base does except you will use less space and maybe save some dollars.

Just my thought's

A moble as a base, all you need is a power supply, in most cases a 7-14 amp will work fine, and a base ant. I use one and prefer it to a base. Its cheaper and it doesn't take up as much room on my desk.I can't see spending big $$ on a base radio when a moble will do the same thing. And i think a moble works just as good if not better as a base. And yes, some mobles have the same board as a base. For example, the Cobra 2000GTL and the Cobra 148GTL are vurtually the same radio.

I agree with lon there is little or no diffrences between the radios take a good look at the mid range ham sets like the dx-70 or ft-100d i use both a fine radio and as good as any base.... for the same price range. When i worked for a unnamed store back 30 years ago we sold in the store a 19 inch to 25 inch tv the bottom line set was $300 and top was $650 they were the SAME set .... in a diffrent box. There is no advange to a base set except if you are into bells and whisels not with todays technolgy ... most like the tv sets use common 10 and 11 type galaxy / ranger boards most have 90% the same curcuit maby a few controls moved around. I have delt with many dealers ( remember i'm a ham ) some are less than honest others i buy from on a regular bases and recomend because there is no worst a feeling that to spend $1000 on a radio and get a " so what " when it dies a few weeks later. Now copper sells good radios it is in their intrest to do so and provide good service to its custmors too ... its a must in this age and they do it well. Pick out a good toy and have fun with it.

Alright thanks for your input. I didnt think it would be a problem. Plus you are right about saving desk space. Think I will pick me up a base antenna and get things rollin.

Now lets say I want to run an old mobile amp with my mobile setup....It is an old silver streak 250. Will the 7-14 amp power supply run both the radio and amp sufficiently?

I run a AR Ranger 3500 on a workman 35 amp supplier and it works fine although i had my CB shop add a few more filter caps to cut down on the HUMMM noise it had when i bought it. Works fine now!

Smokestack, 10 amps per 100 watts. You would need a 25 amp minimum. I would go with a 35 amp to be on the safe side.

Look inside any base radio made in the last 20 years, and there's the circuit board from a mobile model, with a bigger speaker, power supply and more front-panel toys. It's the only economical way to build one. A mobile with a power pack and external speaker is pretty much the same thing, minus a bigger meter and a few knobs.

Ive used mobiles in power supplies more often than base rigs.. I simply dont have the room for a big base radio. I have a 2995 but i had to clear off a lot of space on my desk for it.
