I picked up a Johnson Messenger 4165 the other day. Nice looking and sounding radio. Im only getting about 50% modulation and was wandering if anyone knew of any mods for this radio, or where I can find them. I have checked all my resources.. Thanks for any and all input.

Ceaz,

I can find all kinds of information for the 4175 but nothing to help you with the 4165.

For the 4170/75 I have cut: CR-14 for 100% Modulation. You can check to see if you have this in your radio.

If you do I would not clip it, but unsolder one leg of it and see what it does for your modulation. That way if it does not work you can stick it back in and re-solder it.

You can check to see if you have T17, T18 L5, L6 & L7 these are the ones to adjust for power on the 4170/75

If by chance it has a 5 pin DIN PLUG on it drop me an e-mail.

I am making a road trip down to Visit COPPER so it might be saturday before I can answer your e-mail if you send one.

Tech 808,
Thanks for the great info. I havent compared #'s yet, still waiting to get off work. I'll let you know. It does have the 5 pin plug on it. I was going to try to hook up one of my D104 desk mics to it but I dont want to disconnect the old plug. Thanks again for the information and Ill get back with you.

Tech 808,
Thanks again for the Mods. I was able to get modulation around 100%. I need to find a schematic or photofacts cause the ones for power are not shown on the board and I dont want to go turning things without being sure. Thanks again, and on that mic, I pass for now. Maybe if you still have it a little down the road then we can chat about it.
