Hi
How can you tell if a amp is a high drive? I traded a local for a amp and was told it is HD. It does not say HD anywhere on the amp and has the same pills as my Predator 450 that I traded him for. When I connected it to my current radio it put out more then the predator but showed a higher SWR so the watts were a false reading. Is it the pills that make it a HD. I am getting a new Midland radio that will put out 10 watts key and need a HD amp. What will happen if I run a high key in a amp that is not HD?

All High-Drive means is there is a large current-limmiting resistor in the amp, that is used to reduce the input (drive) wattage. This is so you can drive the amp with higher watt radio and not blow the amp. ( usually a 7-10W drive on a HD amp will give you roughly the same output as driving a low drive amp with 3 or 4W)

Are you talking about dead key watts?
I bought a Texas star 350 HD yesterday and was hoping to not have to worry about turning the watts back since I forget to turn it back half the time. too many knobs on that darn radio.
We checked my radio and it puts out about 8 to 10 watts dead keyand swings around 30.

Some pills do inherantly take higher watts to energize fully particularly 2sc2879 pills, hey tech671 if I'm wrong please set me straight,I don't want to give misinformation,Bigbob.

Some transistors are inherently high drive, true, but not in every application (DX350).
Some claim to be HD and are not. Your best bet with the 8-10w radio is the standard DX500 Texas Star or one of the custom amps with 2879 transistors. There are HD Palomar 450s out there that will work, but I couldn't begin to tell you how to know if it truely is without hooking it up. I have bought many 450s that were supposed to be HD, some were, some were not.

I guess I found the answer to my question the hard way. My Texas Star 350 HD was working fine tuesday night on the way home from work, but wednesday I noticed the meter was not sweeping.
Friday morning I get it to the shop to find out that I had a bad pill and transformer. : (
I was told that the amp cannot take the full power of say 30 watts. Question - Is this what burnt the pill?

Big Boy,

If it is a High Drive 350 it will have EX350HDV on the front of it.

If it is just the 350 it will have EX350 on the front.
