Yes- I have a set. They are pretty low power, and not really solid construction, no belt clip, but the "cool" factor is way up there. The good thing is they operate on a couple of "RC" channels, so the skip interference isn't so bad. |

yes they are FM. They are a bit boxy sounding on transmit if you don't speak right into the little condensor mic hole, but the receive is good. The squelch is good and overall, not a bad toy for what they go for these days on eBay. I'd bet a guy could mod one to go up on 10m FM. They even have the schematic in the manual. |

The manual does note they are in compliance with Part 15 of the FCC rules as of date of manufacture. The print date is 1991. I wasn't aware 27MHz FM phone falls into the "R/C" control category, even at under 100mw. One of the pair I have has military PX stickers on the boxes. They are "Made In China"(aren't all good electronics made there?) I get the impression they were a last ditch effort by Midland to keep the 27MHz talkie concept going. They had to do something different, what with the Solar cycle being at a peak then, ch14 and 11 AM noise unbearable, and 49MHz FM cheap talkies eroding their low-end kid communicator market. Remember, FRS was just barely off the ground in 1991. The funny thing is on the back manual page, it suggests use for: Ranching, Sporting Events, Hunting, Fishing, Hiking, Boating, Camping, Inventory Control, Portable Intercom, Surveying, Security Guards, Stockyards, Construction, Exploration, Civil Defense, Detectives, Mining, Farming, Industrial, as if they were intended as a serious piece of equipment. |

I bet they would work a lot better with a longer antenna like the good old CB w/t's. Well, Bruce, one of these days when the band is open, we'll see if these suckers will get out on 27.095 FM from Texas to Florida ;-) |
