a friend of mine has acquired a ranger 2970 through a trade... it works fine, EXCEPT when the radio is turned off and then turned back on, the frequency shows 26.000 .. even if you were on channel 19 or any other frequency...it always goes to showing 26.000 when the radio is turned OFF and back on later....he is guessing the memory battery is dead but he cant find it... tell me EXACTLY where the battery is ( if there is even one in the radio ) , so I can relay the info to him. Thanks in advance from ME.

The original radio had a small, "coin"-size Lithium cell soldered to the computer board, behind the display board. The later ones do NOT have a battery, but a capacitor. They say it's good for a week. Some folks are lucky to have their memory stay programmed one full day with that one. You don't have to remove the covers to tell. The original one would "beep" ONLY when you pressed one of the front-panel function buttons, or the mike up/down buttons. That one has a battery.

The later versions will ALSO 'beep' BOTH when you KEY and when you UNKEY the mike. THAT one uses an electrolytic capacitor in place of the battery for memory power.

The 'coin' cell in the original version is buried back under wires and connectors. Replacing it with a 2-cell battery holder and two "AA" dry cells may prove easier than locating a coin cell that will fit where the original one went. Either way, steady hands and decent eyesight are a must to pull it off.

Re Replacement battery holder....

My Yaesu FT2400 has a similar battery setup. You have to solder on a new battery. Which can be a pain in the heini. BUT here is what I did. I bought a new battery from rad shack along with two battery holders. I removed the old battery and soldered in the battery holders placing them in a convient place on the inside of the cabinate--easier to get to them there. It is important to use ap parallel connection. I put in one battery in one fo the holdes.

Now when I change the battery all I have to do is put a new battery in the empty holder (which since it is in parallel will not change the voltage applied to an appreciable amount) and remove the old battery from the other. Swapsies so to speak.

NO Memory loss to worry about....
