Is it just me, or as I continue to read, I see as well as hear more people using ssb? Also, why does everyone have to pile up on lower 38. Why can't we all over America start at channel 36 to 40 and work it on lower or UPPER side? I have never figured out why on cb everyone wants to stay on lower side. Any ideas? And how come some of yall get to talk to Hawaii and I will never pick them up? Too far away for the curve of the earth?

Keith,

I agree with you on your comments.
I wish operators would use more channels for SSB operations than just 37 and 38.

With the drop off of interest in CB over the years, I think the SSB operators could probably go below ch.36 and not be a problem with AM traffic.

I don't know why we use the freqs. above 27.405 when the 40 channels allocated are not used very much, at least as far as I hear.

I think it is a shame to have these HF frequencies available to us without the need of a license, and not use them more than we do.
Especially for SSB operation.

One sidebander's opinion.

My opinion is that a giant sucking sound has struck the traditional hideouts for SSB operators, caused by the 5 wpm code rule for getting a 'real' ham license. Listen around 75 and 20 meters, and see how many familiar voices you hear. Those are the guys who populated the ten channels above 40 for 25 years or more. You'll never clear up 36-40 for SSB. That's what pushed the freebanders up there above 40 in the first place. Now AM operators are filling up channels 41-50. A few of the regular SSB 'groups' who are still hanging on have shifted down 5 kHz, in between the "channels" above 40. It gets the AM carriers out of their ears, but doesn't really fix their problem.

Don't know how the "LSB" tradition came about. Maybe to avoid the overseas 'skip' that follows the ham standard: USB on all bands above 14MHz., LSB on 7 MHz. and below. Could it be that sentiment favored doing things the "other" way from the hams' established methods? Never have heard a convincing explanation of that one.

The hams' tradition on that one is a lot easier to explain, but would probably put someone to sleep, so maybe another time..

2600 I think you got it correct. I have been off for 12 years (doing Ham, what a waste) but getting back on again. SSB 11M is more fun than Ham IMHO. Dummy's not sticking to the "Gentlemans Agreement" AM below Ch 30 or so, and SSB above, and English SSB on LSB and Spanish on USB. It used to work out fairly well, but now it seems with all the pre-modded radios ending up in peoples hands they are doing everything all over. When the DX is in I jump all over the place. I find my most meaningfull and interesting stuff above 40 but I still shoot down on occasion and do a little AM. I just modded a AM only radio, and made sure it goes down only that way it won't end up in the wrong hands later when I sell or trade it and mess up SSB more than it is. Great group guys!

I keep an ear on 36 through 38 USB and LSB. Even hook up with locals on 1-40 on SSB whenever possible.
