Can the 99 overdrive the amp? Dead key shouldn't be a problem but it peaks pretty high, I think 40-55 watts. Can those peaks hurt it? Don't want to blow a new KLV-550 especially since it's the "new" one that costs $341 instead of 300! |

Dead key can be a problem. Dead key should be 2 watts input from radio to amp, with 125 watts output on setting # 6 (This is the same question i asked about my KLV 550)and this is what the guys told me. And it's been working great. P.S. I very much enjoyed your story about Washington State. |

Orion, I tried driving mine with a DX93T. It worked just fine on AM (2w deadkey)but I couldn't drop the SSB PEP enough to get down to the 20WPEP Max. Maybe you can with your 99...You may want to post this in the "Ask The Tech" section. They are great amps if you keep the radio within the 550's range. 73's - Ron |

Damyankee how many watts pep do you drive your klv550 on #6 on ssb, and the 93 T does work great on low power AM.(2 watt dead key) Let me know when you are back at work, I need some info, ok |

Well, as long as the 99 can reach down to 2 watts I'm guessing she'll be ok. I like to drive amps for audio and I key them at their minimum for swing, then again, chucking a carrier can be fun too Thanks Jesse for the words and response. If I overdrive the amp there will be "creepy things in my shack".. things like smoke lol. Ron, I talked to 607 I think, about driving one of the KLV base amps with a 93T and was advised to go with a high drive amp. Ironically the SSB performance actually becomes a liability. Maybe if you're careful and keep the gain down it won't swing up too high but that's risky. One accidental whistle and "kaboom!" |

KB, check your e-mail... Orion, that's pretty much the truth on the 93. They just won't drop down enough on SSB(you loose your modulation). Oh well, I'm driving it with my Saturn now and they match each other very well. I don't talk a lot on AM but some of the locals here are 40+ miles out so, level 1 on AM gets me the extra reach and she swings big... I'm actually deadkeying about 1.5 watts in for 110W out of the 550 on level 6. |

You will be just fine..... your 99 is not doing 40-55 watts real watts, 30-35 is more realistic. |
