Yes the Lafayette was a Dyna-Com 23A. It was well made. Recieve, at least on the two I had, was good. Used external speaker, HT speaker was small ands tinny. May have been the reason some thought recieve was not good. Price was around 89 dollars. Strong transmit. Had a spacer to use 2 less batteries when using alkalines. If you wanted extra kick you left out the spacer and used all alkalines. Used on my boat in the 70's worked well.

Only HT I ever saw with SSB was the one Cherokee put out a few years back. Heard they were problematic, don't see them anymore. Eagle makes a 10 meter model that can be modified...

Radio Shack at one time sold a 23-channel walkie-talkie that was double sideband / suppressed carrier. That allowed it to still be compatible with AM mode radios, but put out 12-watts as permitted by the FCC rules.

It was rather expensive and was only offered the one year. By the following year it had been dropped from the catalog. This would have been around 1977 or 1978.

Radiodude,

I thought I was king of the walkie talkies with 35 (not all are 23 channel even)... I bow to your collection...

You aren't married are you? If so does the missus make you sleep in the garage with the HT's 80) ?

I used to be married. Wife said either CB and all the other hobbies go or I will! I miss her when I have to get up and get my own soda...
