I found a new Radio Shack base station at cb shop. Still in the box. 40 channel AM only. Thinking about it for my uncle. He does not need anything fancy, so I thought this might do. Any comments about reliability on their former radios from Rad Shack? Thanks.

I've heard some good talking old Navohoes from RS. This is probably a good radio.

locally radio shack bases are "looked down on "...since they are supposed to be hard to modify for extra channels ( when they will ususlly stay on regular channels 99 % of the time any way )...but if you SAY you got a cobra, or galaxy or a ranger you are thought more of, even though you might have an old trc-30 a 23 channel base....(( take a strip of paper and write COBRA 142 , or some other highly thought of model and folks will think a lot more of ya, than if you say you have a radio shack base ))...listened to that done a bunch of times through the years (lol) heard one fellow say he had a TRAM d - 201 and really had a j c penney mobile on a car battery in the house

Keith,

I have had & sold & worked on many new & used Radio Shack Radios over the years.

You know the one thing I have noticed is that 99.999% cannot tell what kind of radio you are talking on unless you tell them or they guess.

I didnt tell them until about 8 months later when someone asked what i was running!!!!! They though i had a big radio.. Thoise old 458s really could talk good if the right fella tuned them properly!!!!!

I agree with RCI 2990,the TRC-458 is a single conversion radio, use the same chasis as the TRC-449 with one of the best PLL for modifications (858 PLL),plus is a very broadband chasis, with the right modification will cover from 26.085 to 28.045.
P.S.They have a special design
for processing the speech too.

Radio Shack gets a bad rap a lot, but I tell you what, get your hands on a TRC-448 SSB rig and have a good tech give it a tweak and you will have a rightous smoke-blowin radio!!!
Dual audio amp tranistors in push/pull rocks baby!!!!

I had that radio! TRC-448 SSB ,and your right! It was a good rig! And smaller that the SSB competition at the time! It was perfect for My 84 yoda back then! Unfortunately when I tried to have the tech put extra channels in it ,the conversion would not work! And while trying it was fried! Sad day! He made it right! Sold me a 148GTL for $100.00 ! A tad bigger than i wanted but the price was right!
For some reason Radio Shack equipment couldnt be converted!

Matt ....
For the same reason the HTX-10 can't ... Radio shack was under pressure from the FCC to not allow there products to be user converted. RS did make some nice stuff and when used as intended it is as good as any other ....like the HTX-10. One thing to avoid are the older radio shack 2 meter and 440 HT's including the 202 402 AVOID them. And remember radio shack DOES NOT SUPPORT its 2 way radios you cant get parts.

The TRC 451 had the same backbone as the Cobra 146GTL too. The most awesome CB (CB only) radio I have seen. Big ears and AWESOME sideband. It rocked on am too.

Out of all the radios Ive had,The 148GTL was the most awesome!Like I mentioned in the previous post,it was larger than most mobiles, but it was the best in my book! One thing that I wish they changed was the face! It was bright chrome! real pretty but it would be quite a thief magnet! I always covered mine when parked with a knit watchcap!

I like to cover my radios in the mobile as well. With the really expensive radios, I disconnect and hide in the trunk or take in the house.
