It blows the K-40 away! Also you can change the coax on the wilson, whereas, you cannot on the K-40!

wilson's rock, i think the wilson 500 blows away the k40!! but thats just my two cents! i personally own 3 wilson's a little wil, wilson 500 and a wilson 5000 and let me tell you the 5000 rocks, i could not belive the diffrence even over the 500!!! i have owned several diffrent antenna's including k40's k30's mobile antrons big sticks and many others and you could not pry the 5000 out of my hands!! anyways have fun and 73's chris

its better than the k40. but the 7 foot firestick or 102" steel whip will out perform any wilson antenna made for mobile use.

based on field tests i did 3 years ago on my pickup truck in an empty mall parking lot.they rx and tx'ed around 1 s unit better than the wilson 1000 and 5000. all antenna tunning was done using an mfj 259 for ch 20.

151 with the wave and im on the mail.

IS there an advantage to a 5000 over a 1000 if all your putting through them is 4 watts or is it the placebo effect.A friend made a homebrew 10 meter mobile with a quarter wave whip and a tapped loading coil for 5/8 wave, and I said huh?

Bigbob,

My sugestion would be the 1000, LESS money.

Both Antennas work very well.

With the 5000 in order to have it actually handle the 5000 watts you would need to change Coax on it, (too small).

I have had many people come in and buy the 5000 just because it is Bigger and to them looks make the difference. Guess they think if people see it they will think they have a BIG Radio. (most are running stock 4/12 radios.)

So far in 28+ years I have never had anyone come in that could throw over 1500 watts out of their mobile yet. Then I suggested the 102 steel whip with RG213 coax. Worked great!

Just my thought's.

Another Antenna that ive used extensively is the "ANTENNA SPECIALIST BIG MAMMA" You can easily change the coax on it as well! Its a great Antenna for someone on a budget! But if you want the best, get the Wilson 1000!

I forgot to mention, That you should keep in mind, that most antennas require a 3/8'' hole if your going to do a roof mount! The Wilsons will require a 3/4"" hole!

Just my 2 1/4 cents.
I run a 16 watt Grant XL in a Dodge Grand Caravan with a Wilson 1000 mag mount. I have no problem getting from New York to Washington state when ever I need to. Does't do to bad local. Especially when giving truckers directions. For some reason they tend to listen when I speak.

Smoran30 I ran a K-40 it works good but I broke the plastic where the whip went into the load 2 times.
I switched to the wilson 1000 trunk mount I have made some nice contacts with it.
And the swr is so easy to set on the wilson also.
For the radio I run RCI 2950 DX with astatic power mic.
I hope this helps out.

Dunno about the K-40 but some time ago I replaced a less expensive (and VERY noisy) capacitance tuned (oh it was pretty, lol) piece of junk antenna with a 5000.. No comparison and I mean NO comparison.. All the noise gone and great tx and rcv. Always spend the few extra bucks on a well made RF slinger. You won't regret it..

The Wilson easily beats the K-40. The Wilson will also broadband a bit better than the K-40 if you go above or below the CB band. But nothing impressive.

Like 808 said, I too have sold many of the W-5000s to people that think that the bigger the coil, the better.

I have to laugh when people want those huge open coil antennas. They are no better than any other antenna. Their ONLY purpose is to be able to handle more power. And 90% of them are only 1/4 wave antennas.

But getting back to Wilson, in my opinion, they POSSIBLY may be the best CB bottom-loaded coil antenna on the market. Take note that I did not say that they are the best CB antenna. Just possibily the best bottom loaded coil antenna.

Since you asked for opinions, here's another one. The Wilsons are waaaaaaay over priced. Dealer cost is even out of line as far as I'm concerned.

However, if I were forced to use a bottom loaded antenna, it would probably be a Wilson. But fortunately, I don't have to since I use the 6 foot, very broad banded, 1/2 wave Anttron 1700 on my business trucks and personal vehicles.

Do you think someone will mount a cb dish on their vehicle since the dishes are available? Wouldn't look too bad on an RV, huh?

LOL. Will you shutup. You kill me.

Maybe we'll all pitch in and get you one.

WOW. You'll be Q-5, 10-8 then.

But will you be able to get it to work 6 meter? Now that was a dumb question. Of course you will. You'll probably just keep shootimg holes in it until it's within resonence.

102in steel whip with the 6in spring is the way to go.
