Rippedradio You won't be seeing your callsign on QRZ for at least a week to a week and 1/2. Unless they have come up with a way to speed things up. And by the way, keep checking your mail box. Since you're a Ham now, your name and address has been passed around to some magazines and junk mailers. Welcome to the Ham community. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

Chris, Just a silly question, but do you know if your VE's Electronically filed the test results? If not it could take longer or if they did not file them the day after test then also longer. Today was strange on the site as I have never seen just 3 posted to it. Lon Tech808 |

Tech808 Yes, CONGRATULATION's Chris. Just think of all the hard earned money you are going to be spending on 2 and 6 meter equipment. But it'll be fun. Trust me on that. ------------------------------------------------- Tech808 Echo Link? I just can't get into talking to a guy who is sitting on a computer in, for example, Germany. I played with it for a few days but it didn't really jerk my panties down. To me it's more of a challenge when both are using a radio. But I suppose it does have it's purpose. I'll be checking back here to see if someone can explain to me just what that purpose is. No disrespect intended Lon. It's just my morbid sense of humor talking again. I DO hope people can tell when I'm joking with them. Jeff, kc0gxz |

Jeff, The secret is to use the repeater link's when you can and that way you are useing a radio. Main Secret is it allows you to have contact with your friend's when condition's will not allow you to get accross the street. Also it is GREAT when you are on vacation and you can check back with your friend's on net night and let them know what a great time you are having and listen to them cry. ALso we have maybe 12 Hams in nursing homes with Lap Tops, and Computer's that are able to use them to stay in contact with Friends Local & all over the world, where it would be impossibe for them to have Radio Equipment in their rooms and antennas. You would not believe the smile and thank's we got when we took one of our old computers to a nurseing home with two of our HAM Friends in it. It made us Feel GREAT to know they could again talk with friends and stay active in Radio. A lot of older Hams are living in apartment's, retirement homes, nurseing homes or with children that does not want / allow radio's or antennas. But with a lap top or small computer they are alive! Just because you get old or dis-abled you can still enjoy the radio world. Echo Link is also a big plus for the new ham's getting started in Radio that cannot afford Big Equipment or Antennas. It is a BIG help for them to Listen & Talk to other's to learn proper procedure and language so when they do get on the Air they sound like Old Pro's. In the last three month's I have been elmering 7 and three have passed. The big point was letting them listen and Know about Echo Link. With the Sun Spot Cycle about to hit bottom in 2006 it will allow them to continue to have FUN when condition's are dead. Oh, and I forgot I have a "DUMB INDEX FINGER" darn thing dosen't know if it is pushing the key to the Mic or the space bar on the computer to talk. Oh Well, just my Feeble Thought's Lon Tech808

Tech808 Ok Lon. You certainly straightened me out with that explaination. I am obviously looking at it (like everything else) with a very narrow mind. I just have trouble excepting anything new in electronics. And I find it so hard to keep up with it. Just looking at the new generation of todays Ham and some CB radios makes me sick. All surface mount. They, whoever "they" are, are taking all the fun out of radio. You can call it "new technology" all you want. I call it a d--n cheap way to build a radio and take the consumer to the cleaners. There's less than $25.00 worth of componets in them. And I'm also talking about the $2000 plus Ham radios on the market. Heck, I have to use a headband magnifier as it is now just to see the regular sized componets. To be honest with you Lon, I can't do ANYTHING with surface mount radios other than do a alignment, change regulators, finals and anything else in there that might possibly be of "normal" size. I'm in my mid 50s and it seems that I have a problem with excepting change. In my youth, just when I had the automotive voltage regulator, generator and even the electronic vacume tube figured out, someone went and changed the game rules. You're absolutely right about the benefits of the Echo Link. I'm just too narrow minded and perhaps too stubburn to want to look at the plus sides of todays advanced technology. Hell, I'm still mad at GM for going to an alternator in 1962. I even wrote to GM telling them that I finally understood the mechanical and electrical principals of their generator and that they didn't have to go to an alternator now if they didn't really want to. As I expected, no response from GM. And today? Well, now I'm crying over the use of surface mounted componets. It wont do any good to write them. Trust me on this one. I know that some are thinking that I should either get with the program or get out. Thank you for the explaination of the Echo Link Lon. Jeff. |
