I would be curious how all the big coil antennas compare to a stainless 102" with a spring mounted in the same location.

I run a MonkeyMade MM5 on my vehicle. I love it but have no idea how it would compare in reality to the rest of the big coils. Although each have their selling points, I'm not about to put any of them down.

My gut tells me though that all trying to simulate a 1/4 wave antenna, would just about compare somewhat equally to a whip. I do NOT have that answer, but think it would be cool to see a factual test. I'm afraid it would take some cost and serious research as like Tech671 has said before, the same antennas will perform differently on different vehicles. Small cars, big and small trucks, pickup trucks, etc. all have varying factors on which antennas will work the best for their particular situation. Heck, I'd love to test the Coily's vs. Predators vs. 102" vs 55's and all the others just to see what best fits my vehicle but I don't have that kind of money just for that.

Then to refine, does conducting electricity (referencing the CB RF signal) improve with the aluminum antennas compared to a Stainless whip? Interesting thoughts no doubt, but no answers from here (yet?).

Any sponsors LOL?

Alsworld,

ive wondered the same thing for a long time.

and asked so many people about thier experiance with what they liked.

and then i finally desided to gather up a bunch of antennas (some borrowed)and drive to a huge parking lot in town at night when it was empty and try them out durring our nightly rag chew.

i did this on my pick up truck with the ant mount on the top of the cab. and i used this same mount and location for all antennas.

i also set there and pretuned them before i started talking to take alot of time out of switching antennas,i used a mfj 259 for this and tuned them all for the same freq.

the range of our group from my location was veried over a distance of a 1/2 mile to just about 40 miles to the farthest guy.

the antennas i used were
1,wilsons 5000 trucker
2,wilsons 1000 (i had to use its own mount)
3,workmans oil cooled coil ant.
4,workmans big coil ant SP3000 i think it was.
5,penitrater "open coil" i think it was called.
6,7ft firestick
7,102" steel whip
8,storm's flatline dual coil ant
9, 4ft fiber glass whip
10,homebrew .5" copper 1/4~ whip w/brass stinger.
11,homebrew big coil

i did tell them i was testing out antennas and they were all set to give radio checks for each one but i with held the make of the one being tested to keep it as honest as i could. and wrote each one down as they gave them to me adveraged them out and logged it down with bran and type.

at the end of the test it came out like this.
s units +or- are over a wilson 5000.

1st storms flatline by 2.5 + s units
2nd 1/4~.5"copper pipe w/brass stinger 1.5+ s
3rd a tie 102"ss whip and 7ft firestick 1+s
4th the wilson 1000,5000,sp3000 to close to call.
5th workmans oil cooled ant at -1s units.
6th the open coil penitrater at -1.5 s units
7th 4ft fiber glass whips - 3s units

had problems with my homemade coil it didnt make the test but a month or so later i got it right and talked to Marhall McCloud and 30-06 down on the river bank in the sand pile, from my mobile witch for me is something as my truck dont have any skip condition ever.haha

but like ya say this might not be the results you get on your car or suv.
so i cant say that this ones 100% the best period.
but i do think the closer to 1/4 wave you are without alot of coil the better it performs.
and as for coils it "seems" the bigger diameter of the coil and material used the better they perform. the coil on my home brew is about the diameter of a 2 liter bottle.

i think you just got to play around and try out a bunch till you find what works on what you drive.

Now that's some interesting information. I always wanted to do a test like that. My previous home 20 in Florida would have been perfect as there were many nightly CB'rs, most of us with base stations in various parts of town that could do things such as that, but never had enough antennas (or made the time) to do it. I was able to tell that my Monkey Made outperformed my old K40 (but I also changed everything from the mount, grounds, coax at the same time), but also was able to test how directional, or omnidirectional it was in a large parking lot. Mounted dead center on the roof of my pickup truck, it seemed to those assisting me that it was pretty darn omnidirectional, which is what I hoped the results would show. The farthest base was 20 miles, the other about 10 in a different direction.

Probably not near as scientific as what Tech833 or the other Techs may do, but you and I have at least done something to form some (what I feel) are valid opinions.

I always had good luck with a previous Francis fiberglass antenna and spring. If I ever got around to doing what you did, I would have to throw that one in as well.

Thanks for that information!
