Im new to this forum, I was wondering what type of radio would be the best for me to set back up. I was wanting to go with a Galaxy DX77 with the frequency counter or should I look into others.

Wildchild,

Welcome to the Copper Forum!

What do you use most and what features do you want in a Radio?

And what features do you plan on useing the most?

AM / SSB, Talkback, Echo, Power, will you be useing an amp with it.

Another Question is what price range are you looking at.

If you are looking for a radio with all of the features of the 77 and has a Freq counter try the VR-9000.

It does not have a Mic Gain that some people think it should have.

After selling close to 75 of these and Owning 2 and useing 2 of them daily, I honestly have seen no reason to have the Mic gain.

This radio has all the features and cost's less than a 77.

Just my thought's

Lon

wildchild, vr9000 if money is a factor or if it is not then go with a 2950 or 2970! if u use am alot and sideband a little go with the vr9000 if u use sideband mainly and am a little then the 2950/2970! if you really like the 77 then also check out the superstar 3900ghp! or the connex 4800 with or without echo!! 73's chris

Mobile or base? (I'll assume mobile). What Features do you desire? SSB? More than 4 watts or ham radios?

I'm assuming you want a 10 meter radio with a frequency counter. Modified for 11 meters?

Let us know what you are looking for in a radio, what frequencies and we will pump you full of opinions :). Lots of experience here.

Well guys I should have gave more info. I got hooked on SSB a long time ago and I havent keyed a mic sense Regan was president. Thats how long I have been away.

I was thinking about the Galaxy DX 77 to use as a base cause a friend has one in his truck and has one in his house and he says they do a good job for him. I will be using it on the 11 meter band. The noise toys dont interest me just so I can shut them off is all I want. The frequency counter is a must but I just like seeing if there is anything going wrong with my equipment. The only radio I kept is an old President Madison and as soon as I can I will be setting it up.

If there is a base out there that will fill my needs then Im all ears. Theres a lot of new stuff out there and things I need to get caught up on so guys I might ask some pretty stupid questions.

My Dad had a Madison that my brother has now. Excellent radio. If it's been setting for a while you may want to have a local REPUTABLE shop or one of the techs here take a look at it. As long as you are'nt looking to go 3 or 4 bands out of the standard 40 you will be hard pressed to beat the Madison. Dad's STILL talks as good as my Saturn.

W.C. From what you are saying it sounds like a Magnum 257 would work, good on AM and SSB and does'nt have all the stuff you would'nt use.

W.C. I run a Connex 4800 in my truck, and have had nothing but admiration for the radio. I had a 2970 before, and I prefer this radio. Of course the Daves made helps!

Was wondering if anyone had heard or knows where I can find some information on a radio called Magnum 3200 Base. A friend was telling me that it might just fit what what I need.

the add i saw was compairing this rig to the galaxy melaka so i guess it's in that class, i have not seen a pic yet but it sounds ok, a built in counter would be nice! the price i have seen is 249.00 which is ok i guess sounds a little high to me but if quality is great than it would be well worth it! 73's chris KC0QMB

Ok I have narrowed it down and Im going get the Ranger RCI 2985 DX & as long as Im at it I might as well go with a broadband antenna so the only thing that I see that fits the bill is the I-max 2000.

Thanks guys yall have helped me more than yall think. I have been away from the radio scene too long and there is so many new things out there. And yes Im and ole backwoods Kentucky boy.

A friend is gave me an antenna so in the next couple weeks the old President Madison will be back on the air ways. It has the uppers in it and I had it checked out it is still in good shape to be sitting in a box in a closet for 15 years. I do have a Turner Super Sidekick wired for the Madison soit should do just fine.
