Hi there, I have been CB'ing as a side hobby since I was 15. I never went through that playing around phase as most kids that age, I was seriously interested and tried my best to get in where I fit in and did just that. I put it off for quite a few years now, I am now 25. I want to get back into this, but this time around I want to play with the big boys. Something I always wanted to do, but money in my teens was not where it needed to be. Since my later teens I have been wanting the Galaxy DX99v. I have been wanting this radio for years and years. I am soon to be in a position to get one, but I worry if I am being narrow minded in getting this radio only because I have always wanted it and never could. Care to give any suggestion on this radio? Is this somthing I can tweak and tune and eventually add a kicker to? Am I letting my longing for this radio to get in the way of choosing a more decent fitting radio? I would love to hear from anyone with this radio or the knowledge to give me an insight. Thanks to all!

Boogieman, the 99v is a good radio if you like all the "TOYS" that it comes with and you work AM.In my opnion, its not a good ssb rig as say Magnums, Lincoln\HR2510, etc. To answer your queation on running a kicker and "TWEAKING" and "PEAKING", if you plan on buying it from Copper, let the Copper Techs do the tune and conversion for you. It will be setup right.

Just my .02......

what kind of talking are you into. if you are into a.m talking and making all kinds of interesting sounds i would say the 99 would be a fair choice, although a bit pricey. i would consider the connex 4800 it is considerably cheaper. same basic radio minus robot and voice changer. plus the connex has a 6 digit counter where the galaxy has a 5 digit counter.

now if you talk mostly sideband and don't care about noise toys and just want a barebones radio that is a solid talker i would have to say get a lincoln. i bought one and havent regreted it. many others on this forum will back me on this one.

Boogieman, its like the chevy-ford thing, just a matter of opinion and what you like. I like the galaxy 88 or 99 over the rangers or 2510/lincolns. And I have tried them all, got 2 rangers and 2 galaxys right now. I've owned several dozen of the 2510s since they came out in the mid 1980s, if your gonna run barefoot, they have a little more output on SSB than the galaxy, otherwise no better, maybe worst on bleedover, I like the Galaxy receive better. Also I think the galaxys run an ampflier better because of the low key up/swing ratio on AM. For all around features and looks, I don't think you can beat the galaxys. Of course if you need 10 meter, the rangers and 2510/lincolns are the way to go. I haven't used some of the later radios, like the Magnums, enough to really give an opinion on them. Unless someone's owed and used several of a certain radio, its hard to give an honest opinion, you can get a lemon in anything. Any of these radios, with the right mike and setup can be made to sound excellent, its just a matter of what you like. scrapiron

Boogieman,

If you like the features of the galaxy, maybe you might want to consider the VR-9000. It is basically the same radio without the dressy chrome pakaging. And at $200 for the VR-9000, it will also save you a few bucks over the Galaxy. Both radios will really talk on am. They also have the noise toys built right in. If you like modest, clean sounding ssb, then go with the lincoln or hr 2510. They are simple to use and solid performers!

Boogieman

I can only echo what the others have said. In my opinion, the G-99 is nothing more than a very expensive good-buddy noise-toy.

If you only play on AM, any Connex with dual finales is half the cost and would be the cheaper way to go. If you are a serious sidebander, I recommend the Magnum DeltaForce or the President Lincoln (in that order). The DeltaForce is far more versital. With the DeltaForce you will have full control of your RF power in any mode. 5 memories. Super clean audio. Full control of the talkback volume. Frequency span from 25.160--29.695, and a digital echo. 35 watt dead-key on FM. AM will EASILY swing to that after a NPC modification. Sideband will be somewhere from 30 to 35 watts PEP.

The Lincoln has a great transmitter and probably the best receiver in the industry. My biggest complaint with it is it has a tiny frequency display. It also has verible power but only in AM mode.

If you go with one of todays Chinese made 2950DX's, you will be disappointed when you open it up and look inside of it. All surface mounted componets. Since you like to "play" on the inside of your radio, I do not recommend this one. The 2950DX will have to go back to a repair shop for repairs unless you are very good with surface mounting technology.

Give any of your choices plenty of thought before you buy. And if you buy from Copper, they will set your new radio up for you in advance of shipping. Watch for their specials. They usually have some kind of good deal running at all times.

The opinions I have given you on these radios are just that. MY Opinions. I also am in the Ham-CB business and have been in many of these radios. Some are far better built than others. Some are built (as stated above) the cheapest way possibly. Choose wisely.

Jeff, kc0gxz.

I have a 2970DX and so far i love it!
Ive had my fair share of galaxys, rangers, and connexes and 2510s and 2600s and so on.. They all have their oddball quirks and good points but its all what you want to do.. The 2510s and 2600s and lincolns are good for SSB and the galaxys are prety much a pricy AM radio not very good for SSB though! But all in all of all the radios ive had ive always went back to the Rangers.. First real good radio i had was a 2950 back in 1992 or so.
