Over the past 30 years i've probably collected on my homeowners at least a dozen times, this was for lightning damage. Several radios, power supplies, TVs, VCRS, telephones, sat equipment, and the last few years some computer equipment. They've never gave me much lip, just wanted something from a shop as to the value and if it could be repaired. Some homeowner policies have a limit, some as low as 1000 bucks, that wouldn't buy much. After mine done that, I took out an extra rider for my electronic equipment, its not very expensive. BTW, everytime i've had lightning damage, it came thru the electric power, never had an antenna hit.

Karatebutcher,

check your home owners insurance and also vehicle insurance. It "should" be covered, but you might have to take pictures (for proof), but let your insurance Co. know that you have these items installed in your home/auto and ask them about your policy coverage.

You have some nice equipment. Call it "ham equipment" or 'amateur operators equipment" as that is what you have (depending on what your company needs specifically). You pay your dollars to insurance companies for years, they do not care whether you are licensed, just what you have in your home/vehicle.

Of course, if the worst happens, be honest on what was lost. Legal or not, integrity makes all the difference in my mind. I know you, but this is a general statement. If at home via a lightning strike or other phenomenon, at least the insurance adjusters can see what they are dealing with.

Bottom line, it should be covered, but a few questions and pictures do wonders.

In addition....

In addition to the post of 63, if you are an amateur and a member of the ARRL you can get insurance on your equipment.

Contact the ARRL web page or give them a phone call requesting information on their radio insurance program.

I know all my equipment, including my antennas and computers are covered by my insurance policy. I asked my agent and she said it was all covered. Have yet to use it.

I would not only ask if the equipment was covered, but if there's a limit. Some policies have a large deductable, like 5 or 6 hundred dollars, then a 1000 dollar limit on electronic equipment, that doesn't leave much. My son got caught in that deal, lost a couple thousand. Insurance companies are in business to make money, period, when something starts eating on that profit, they change the rules. Back in the 1970s, I had 2 nice radios stolen from my vehicles, filed a claim with my homeowners, and they paid, later, because so many radios and tape players were being stolen, the companies excluded any music reproduction equipment, or communciation equipment in a vehicle, from homeowners policies. In most cases those high priced CD players, etc in your vehicles are not covered now. Have you noticed when you get your renewel premium due bill, there will be some 'changes' pointed out in your policy, generally what that means is less coverage. How many reads those, or their policy.

HOMEOWNERS .....

Maby its just here in florida but homeowners insurance is very hard to get. In 1982 it cost me $144 now $1200 and im one of the few who hasnt been cancled this time...... o but was just after the hurricane hit in the 90's. Check your policy CLOSELY here if its damaged by wind or a act of god like lighting you'll likely have no coverage. Ive been here 30 years and there is something fishy when ONE bad day they just dont want my money ..... even at 8 times what i paided anymore. As for 2 way radios the ARRL sells insurance and some hams here fine it better than none. Check your coverage they have gutted coverage heck they now cover you only for being robed at 2 am on a sunday in a snowstorm in tampa ..... it's getting that bad. And forget coverage in your car last i checked here in tampa was $13 per hunderd for a radio with $50 deduct ill pass and just keep it in a large cookie jar marked COPPER'S GOODIES FUND.
