Re MM, if I read your correctly you are looking for an antenna with three verticals with a switching device in the center that switches the active antenna around so as to kind of aim the beam electronicly. I believe that this type of antenna is no longer made. You may however find an old one at a garage sale, or estate sale. Ebay anyone? Good luck on your hunt. DE |

They are all over the place here were i live. I assume they are left over from the "Boom era" of the midf 1970s because they are right here were i live and i never hear anyone use them... |

Also, take a look at Signal Engineerings Thunder 8XB. I, too, was looking for a Super Scanner and ran across this Bi-directional/ omni directional style antenna. Has better rejection than the Super Scanner. Cost $234. I love it. mikefromms |

I wonder how much power that switchbox will handle ? The super scanner was only about 300 watts. |

I owned a super scanner back in the late 80's and had it set up about 65'in a tree top. That was the best set up I ever had bar none. The height helped a lot but the antenna was fun to operate. Also, with 150 watts I could talk anywhere I could hear. I had extra ears on my amp too. I do think, as much as I can remember and compare, the Thunder 8 has better rejection than the super scanner. But you won't find me knocking the super scanner. mikefromms |

They did make two models of the superscanner, even the inside control box was different. I've known guys that ran 1000+ watts into the later models. When you look at that little rg58 up on top running from the box to the elements, you wonder how it took it. I guess there's two stories to this, you don't get those meter watts up to the antenna, and that coax will take a lot more than its rated for. Heck, in the old days, i've seen guys running BIG amps into rg-58 and groundplanes, talking like crazy, also later, monster amps into rg58 on mobil rigs. Of course, seen a few meltdowns also. ha, scrapiron |

If your match is good 1500 watts is MAX on rg-58,and if you have a big enough coil in your truck you don't need the heater in winter, lol. |

Another company supposingly (heard several reports) made a four element SS antenna. I would have liked to have seen one of these. It would be interesting to see how the rejection works and so forth. They sure came up with some good idea for antenna back in the 70's. Now and then you see some good idea today. The Thunder 8 is a good antenna much like the super scanner. mikefromms |

The many yuears back the ARRL printed and article on making a switched array of dipole (used 5).It used a center pole and the five dipoles arranged around it. The aritcle was on 40m but not hard to re-scale for 11m. If anyone interested let me know and I'll dig it out and do the maths. |

Mike- The "other company" was Turner, back in about 1979 or so. It was a 4 el switched array, retailing for about $50 more than the SS at that time. |

Wow, I'd like to find an article on that bad boy. It sounds like the perfect rotorless antenna if it truly worked all four directions with rejection. mikefromms |

The arrl antenna handbook shows how to make one for various freqs. quite easy, and very directional. |
