Well, after two days of installing, I am finally done putting the Lincoln in the Pick-up truck. I removed the headliner and mounted everything to the ceiling of the cab. That was one long job to do it right. Almost no wires or coax are visible.

Real cool, as the radio is at an angle and tilt, so it stares you right in the face, but is far enough away, (Just above rearview mirror) it is not a nuisance. Amp is on ceiling too.

Anyway, the performance is better than expected. By the way, I drilled through the roof of the cab and installed a ball mount. My opinion is, direct mount is best. At least I have better luck doing it that way.

I have a variety of antennas, Firestik KW2 for around town when no real performance and low clearance is needed. A Firestik KW-6 and a 1/4 wave 102" stainless whip. The whip is outstanding on swr. I had the radio modified for 11 meters and the whip is near perfect on swr from bottom to top of all frequencies. Did not even have to tune the whip.

The radio is quiet and the receive is excellant.
My first radio check was to another mobile 10 miles away and he was in a valley and said I was like being right there with him.

The ergonomics of the radio are perfect. But most importantly, the talkability and receive are outstanding.

I have a ham friend who is rather arrogant regarding cb or lower budget ham radios, and he is impressed with it. I have had nothing but very positive remarks from the receiving end of conversations while on the radio.

I am a hard person to impress, and I am more than satisfied. In my opinion, if anyone is considering a new radio, go for the Lincoln.

My previous radio for mobile was a Galaxy DX959 also bought from Copper over a year ago and the Lincoln takes the prize by a mile.

Oh, one more thing. A guy said I was too loud and a bit over modulated. I did not have mic gain on. I pulled the mic away to about 6" and tried again, he said sounded perfect. That tells me this thing has plenty of modulation. So a lesson learned, even with a stock mic you don't have to get right on the mic to get out. The guy was about 8 miles away on a base.

Again, I would highly recommend the Lincoln. Get them while you can.

just my viewpoint...

The Lincoln is a solid stable radio the board is well marked and if your into tinkering you got a lot of mods to chose from. Adding the chipswitch makes this radio into a very versital set even on most gives you 12 meters. I run mine on 29.6 fm and its as good as any ham radio out there.

The Lincoln IS a great radio but what impresses me the most is the way and location you mounted the antenna. Grounded directly on the roof where it should be. I know that a lot of your time and effort went in to that project. And as you can see, it was all worth it.

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the 102" SS whip. Yes, they do work very well and are still the BEST 1/4 wave antenna on the market. My two beefs with them is the fact that (1), they are so heavy. They are constantly swaying and whipping around while on the move and still moving a few minutes after the vehicle has been brought to a stop. And number (2), they are a 1/4 wave. The high angle of radiation of a 1/4 wave was never to my liking. This is based on personal experience with them and is in NO WAY shunning your proper installation.

But I'm sure you know that your system WILL outperform any rinky dink mag mount system no matter what kind of antenna they are using. You obviously know that nothing compares to a properly grounded antenna system such as yours.

Excellent job Kattracker. My hat's off to you.

Kc0gxz,

Thanks for the compliment. I did fail to mention my antenna situation in detail. I have an assortment of antennas for different uses.

Firestik KW-3 5/8 wave For in-town driving and when no big performance is an issue.

Firestik KW-6 5/8 wave for line of site talking and long distance in non skip conditions.

Firestik II 5 footer that was given to me. I seldom use it though. It is so close to the 6 footer.

102" Stainless whip for skip and when I am camping in dense woods or valleys. I think because of their radiation pattern they get you out of the hole so to speak.

So thats about it as far as antennas.

After extensive testing it has proved to be an excellant set-up. I have talked barefoot as far as 28 miles mobile to mobile. That was using my Firestik KW-6 5/8's wave.

I am more than imprerssed. I would say the Lincoln is the best radio for the money.

Everyone I have spoke to on the radio has made a comment as to how well it sounds.

I would say to anyone who is considering a new radio, get a Lincoln while you can.

Coppers price is hard to beat. I have seen them at some other web sites for $349.00 which is way higher than Coppers price.

I do not know if it is true, but I heard they are going to be hard to get soon. I do not know why, but that is what I have heard from many people.

Who all has a Lincoln?

I really like mine, but do any of you think the LED meter could use a bit more contrast? The small triangle when tuning swr and the letters mod, swr and rf could be a bit more defined.

If they could be as clear as the numbers that are permanetly etched on the LED that would be an inprovement.

Other than that I think it is near perfect.

Well, here I am back again with more to say about the Lincoln.

I never expected I would get so many good reports about the sound of this radio.

99% of the new contacts I make, the same question is ask. "what are you talking on, you sure sound loud and clear"?

In my opinion this radio is as good as it can get without going to a high priced Kenwood or similiar ham radio.

I may be boring some of you with my repeated post on this radio, but the Lincoln is worthy of the compliments.

If you want a new radio, why settle for second best? Get the best! Go with a Pres. Lincoln.

Not a bad rig for its class. Exellent recive but could use better filtering on both CW and SSB. readout is a little on the small side but is still an attractive rig. I have run mine for 15 years (HR-2510) same rig I hear but to run CW I have to use an external keyer. no problem most rigs of higher class dont have internal keyers eigther. Modulation with stock mike was reported to be a little mushey with the earily units but that problem was adressed later than my rig. All in all not a bad rig for the price but of course not comparable to a all mode HF rig of quality.

codeman for CW you could have installed a channelguard @ 10.695 mhz replaced the stock filter elems with 10.695 crystals and even diode switched it in or out for other modes the other mod if CW is your mode is a audio bandpass filter set to 800 hz @ 100 cps bandwidth. I did just this on 2 meters for a stand alone EME receiver worked just fine. As soom as my eyes settle and have adjusted to my new drugs the lincoln and grant both will be moded with the channel guards i bought for them. As for AUDDDDO i have no problem with the stock .... I have a BIG MOUTH no preamps needed.

yeh there is a lot a guy could do but the rig has been pretty much used for collecting dust the last 8 years. I have a yeasu 847 with the collins filter. not the best rig by far but it works good. thanks for the ideas bruce maybe some rainy day ill pry the covers off that old 2510 and perform some surgery.

Codeman

When i went looking for a HF rig the 847 was in the top 3. I bought the FT-840 because it is everything i need and left enough money left over to still buy several other nice sets. DSP dosn't do much for my needs and with the filters fm board it covers all modes i will ever use. The lincoln will be my 10 meter station freeing up other radios for other things Problem now to get my shack out of redtag hock and get wiring in and a shack going ... at least get on the air from the new room....at least on 20 17 10 6 and 2 for now.
