I continue to hear about the changing of the guard on Sunspot Activity. Would some of you educated folks explain what is going on and how it will affect our signals on CB bands, as well as ham bands for next few months or even years? Thanks for the education. Keith in Atlanta |

OK sunspots 101 they run in 11 year cycles right now we are on the down side about 1/2 way so in 6 years we will be on the up side and in 9 years at peek again. The MUF (MAX USEABLE FREUQENCY) when they are peak can get all the way to the 2 METER BAND! 144 mhz and at the bottom not go higher than 14 mhz. A sign that the MUF is very high is skip which is usaly 1000-3000 miles is as short as 200 miles ! thats it! |

OK, SUNSPOTS LESSON #2 Please go to the link below and Read. http://www.copperelectronics.com/sunspot.html OR Go to the MAIN Copper Page and scroll down to the bottom and Click on "Sunspot Cycle Report". We are in Sunspot cycle # 23 It will bottom out in 2006 and then start back up in it's 11 year cycle. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO For the Next 3 years it is only going to get WORSE! And it Will affect Everyone, Everywhere, on every Band / Frequency. This is where your Radio's, Antenna's and Coax will really come in to play. Check them all and make sure they are at 100% as you will need the Best setup possible to get out and be heard. I sure am glad the Forummaster included this link on the Sun Spot Cycle the Copper Main Page to answer Sun Spot Cycle Questions. The Forummaster makes it very easy on the rest of us common folk's. CB'ing actually picks up in my part of the country when the skip/sunspots are on the down cycle. The CB radio is a reliable form of communication again, base or mobile. When it's at a high peak, the only thing that's reliable is skip. People here are already turning those base stations on again at night, you can actually here some conversations, instead of skip noise. scrapiron |

Scrapiron63 You couldn't be more correct. When the DX is gone, local long-distance communications will be great. And that is when you will find out what your system is REALLY capable of. Jeff, kc0gxz. |

Thats the beauty of ham radio. If you want local go vhf,uhf if you want dx then go hf. you are not stuck or dependant on just one band like on cb so in a nut shell sunspot lows dont bother me I just switch to a lower band then as the years go by and the solar storms increase and the muf moves up then so do I. |

MURS the Memorandum Opinion and Order and Second Report and Order released May 23, 2002, the Commission updated the service rules regarding five Industrial/Business Pool VHF frequencies known in the PLMR community as the VHF “color dot” frequencies. These frequencies were moved from Part 90 to Part 95 and became a new Citizens Band Radio Service (CB) named the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS). The Commission defines MURS as a private, two-way, short-distance voice or data communications service for personal or business activities of the general public. |
