I wouldn't. You need 1.5 to 2 watts.

Hey Bobby,

The KLV 350 will take 1-10 AM, 2-20 SSB according to the KLV web site!

Take care, Scott

Diggerodell,

I would suggest from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 Watts.

Does the KLV-250 have pre-amp? One site I pulled up "implies" that it does but does't elaborate. Copper's doesn't mention a pre-amp to pull in weaker signals.

Thanks,

VR-16 AM ~ LOW POWER
VR0-14 AM (AMC)modulation for AM

mikefromms,

I have a KLV-250 base, and I really like it. It likes a 1.5 to 2 watt deadkey, and will do a nice job for you. The preamp works well and is variable.

Thanks Highlander, I have one in the mail from Coppers as I write. I have a Lincoln with variable rf power. I guess I just run it all the way back or close to it.

Does yours run your swr up very much when it is on?

Wow! These things are built like tanks and the quality and performance is excellent! Running this thing on low with the pre-amp on is like adding 100 foot of height to my antenna (maybe more).

No, swr isn't affected to any significant degree on my setup. I run mine with a Roadpro Titan II RPSY485 set at 1 watt deadkey, swings to 5 watts. Basically turns the little roadpro into a 100 watt rig!

I think my radio is still too strong even with the knob turn all the way left. Which pot controls am power and sideband power (watts)?

I don't think the KLV 250 will handle much more than 12 watts on sideband. Mine smoked when I set it on high just for a few seconds and I wasn't driving the ssb with more than 15 watts max.

BTW, don't let curiosity cause you to open that box to see what went wrong (or any seal), you will seal the deal--if you know what I mean. I just ate a two week old KLV 250.

Mike,
Bet'cha you only fried a resistor or two, send it to copper and they can fix it no sweat. I like my KLV-350, one time I pumped in up to 40 watts on SSB when I had a few too many! (it got quite hot) But it has held up very well and it's 2 years old now and still working like new. I bought two new spare EL-519 tubes, but havent needed them so far. A Tough and Respectable little box!

308,
With a 2 watt dk the KLV-350 on low does around 50 watts & swings to about 120, on high it will do around 70 watts with a swing up to 150+. My opinion is thats it's best to tune it for max swing on the low side and then run it only on the low side, thats where it really shines. It only has a tuning knob, no drive or plate adjustment which makes it pretty simple to tune. It does not have a receive amplifier. It has very good audio and I always get great reports. The fan inside is a little noisey to me, it would be much better if it were controlled by a thermostatic variable heat sensor. Overall it's a great little unit, and if it's not abused will provide many years of reliable service. Hope that helps. Happy dx'ing.
