Just because an antenna is a perfect match doesn't mean it radiates well, ie: a dummy load.

I advise both of you to check your setups, and make sure you're using an accurate meter.

Could be a big difference in radios too. Some just don't put out.

Allagator,

Do I understand correctly that your friends swr is 5.0?

2.0 is in the caution zone and 3.0 is don't use it.

If he keeps talking with a 5.0 it wont be long and his final will burn up.

I think of it a little differently. The higher the SWR, means the higher the reflective power (which is subtracted from your forward power). So were you both putting out 30 Watts? 50 Watts?

He could put out 100 Watts but with a high SWR only actually put out 75 Watts.

If you are putting out 50 Watts and a flat SWR (1:1), then he's still out talking you in this example. BUT, he's got alot of heat (relective power) going somewhere else... Not good....

a 3.0 swr is 25% lost power, who knows what 5 is.

Check your meter

Taz,

5:1 SWR represents about a 43% power reflection.

Allagator,

Your friend's radio may be mistuned and generating excessive off-frequency signals which can drive up the SWR without too much reducing the fundamental (on-channel) power. Check his SWR reading using his antenna and your radio. If it's better using your radio, his radio may need tuning or repair.

Regards,

Bob
