This happened to the guys in the shop next to mine.

They have several large cranes that they use to pick up large and heavy things.

We will call them group #1.

Group #2 is a cement company in town. This cement company has a quarry in the north end of town. They get the limestone for the cement up in the hills and transport it by their personal train DOWNHILL to the plant where they make the cement.

A distance of about 5 miles.

Please take note that the quarry is at a much higher elevation than the plant.

Today one of the train cars got away from the guys at the quarry. It rolled down hill and wrecked at the first sharp curve due to it's speed.

(This is not the first time that they have had this kind of accident, Last time it was the whole train!)

Group #2 called group #1 and #1 brought out 2 large cranes. Between the two groups they managed to get the train car back on the RR tracks.

As group #1 unhooked their hooks from the car it rolled away! It crashed down hill from the first curve......At the second curve!

The 2 groups of people went to the second crash site and picked the battered train car up....Again.

This time they blocked the wheels so that it would not roll off a 3rd time.

:D

Lol. That had to make your day.

Do either of these companys have any english speaking people working for them or are they all holding Green Cards?

Forum Master. What are the chances of us having a "Joke Section" on the forum?

Jeff, kc0gxz.

Forum Master Note : I don't have a problem with it but we would have to keep it clean. Do you think that is possible?

Them boy's insurance compant know about their mishaps yet...or do they still have insurance since this isn't the first time?

Besides, I thought the brakes on box cars were designed to be "positive subscription"...meaning they lock if no air pressure is present from the engine so they can't free travel?

I don't know much about trains. (btw they have bottom dumper cars and not boxcars).

I do know that the train co's often let cars roll by them selves down hill to another place where they stop them.

Barstow ,Ca has such a yard.

Anyway being a privatly owned train I really doubt if it gets maintenance unless it's broke. Brakes are prolly not real high on the fix-it list.

I have looked at the wheels before and noticed that the brake shoes rub directly on the wheels. When a train wrecks the wheels usually fall off. Maybe they had to back off the shoes to get the wheels back under it and forgot to re-adjust em.

This still would not explain the first wreck.

You won't have a problem with me.

And I'm sure the others will keep it clean also.

Thank you and 73s.

If the wheels fall off then the hoses must be reconnected,if this is a common occurrence, then they probably leave them off.The brakes only work if the air tank on each car has air pressure, this is supplied by the locomotive, then when the car is uncoupled air from the air tank applies the brakes this is reliable if there is no leaks, eventually the air tank loses all it's air and the brakes retract and away we go.
