Hi Pete, That sounds about right for that radio. Saw your other post about the audio limiter and the answer is leave it alone. Cutting it out will only ruin the other componants on the printed curcuit board. You wont gain a thing except harmonics and splatter which will look like more power on a meter but trust me, it wont be. Get yourself an amp if you need more power. Hope this helps. |

pete, The New RCI 2980 is their "LOW POWER VERSION." From the Ranger Spec Sheet on the 2980: CW / AM / FM /: 10 W RMS SSB: 25 W PEP So you are right in the ballpark on power. Lon Tech808 |

Pete, If it is still under warranty I would Not break the factory seal & void the warranty. VR-14 is the (AMC) modulation control for AM Adjust for maximum swing on AM VR - 13 AM HIGH Power Adjustment VR - 16 AM LOW Power Adjustment VR - 12 ALC for (SSB) Adjust for maximum power in SSB mode in transmit. that is right for a radio from the factory, but if the 'pots' that you turned really were the right ones, you should be seeing about 40w ssb and 25-30w of modulated am power on a dosey/astatic type meter. this should be made while using a dummyload or very well tuned antenna.

I turned the right pots and saw hardly any change. |

Man that sucks... I had a 2980 once that screamed.. Did 100 watts SSB and 75 AM.... LOL!!!! No i take that back more like 1/2 those readings... I ened up selling it because everyone said it sounded soft on AM and SSB even with a D 104 no matter what i had done to it and i even had the limiter removed... Still no avail so out the door it went...... |

Hey Pete,I've got a 2980 and it does about 30-35w on ssb and 25-30w on am wide open and I had it set so when the RF power is all the way down it does 3 watts to drive my D&A but I hardly ever used it.With the RF back at peak, and on my old A99 at 40ft,I had no problem talking a 40 mile radius.BTW I don't know what to cut for the limiter and I wouldn't advise it,a guy cut mine in my Galaxy 99 and almost fried it!!!Hope this helps. |
