Rumor has it the FCC is in Lafayette, Indiana.

A local lawn company was mowing a large field and spotted a man standing in front of a van holding what seemed to be a small beam. The alledged FCC guy was pointing it in different directions and another guy was taking notes or something.

When ask by the lawn guy what they were doing, they told him they were tracking signals. When ask what for, the guy told him they were following up on a report regarding illegal radio operation.

Who knows if it is ham or cb. There are sure alot of both operating illegally in Lafayette.

LOL!!! Thanks Bruce.... I don't think you will be seeing me... But there may be some good-ole boys here that always run the lower channels causing interferance to some local hams wearing the bright orange jumpsuits, with the letters TCC for Tippecanoe County Corrections.

Don't drop the soap boys, Bubba is on the prowl for some new fish.

it may not even be the fcc. it may be a communications company that is trying to catch bootleggers of a repeater system or someone who is messing with a public service system(keep keying it or keying and cussing at police, etc). both of these fall under 'illegal radio operations' and happen more often then you think. it is usually faster to get the local comm. guys out than the fcc. yes, they can't do anything about it, but they can find where it is coming from b4 the fcc even shows up. but i know, it takes all the fun out of it if it is anything but the fcc.

just something to think about b4 everyone in your area starts hiding cb equipment.

ss8541,

I did not include the fact that the van had a license plate that was issued to the U.S. Government. The lawn guy, having radio background, thought to look at the plate.

Again this is heresay. I did not personally see it.

Now I may be wrong on this, but I would think that IF that was the FCC, and since they are a part of the Govt., that they would have to #1- Obtain permission to stand on someones private property to signal hunt (which maybe they did in this case) & #2- Show anyone who asks some type of identification as to who they are and what the purpose is. Yeah they are the Govt., yeah they can do anything they want, but from my dealing with the FCC, they DO NOT want any kind of trouble. Everything must be done in a fashion that does not hold them responsible from breaking any kind of civil rights laws. I'm sure some may disagree with me on that, but again I can only suggest my experience. It may have been as SS8541 suggested, but then there's that Govt. plate...so who knows?

Those "FCC in town" rumors have been flying often for many years. Kattracker is telling it just like he's heard if of course, but I wonder if it was a government operation looking for illegal operators they would advertise by telling about it. More than once I've seen different companies up here in these mountains with vans and antennas checking the coverage of their cellphone towers. The coverage is really bad in these deep valleys. They were outside the vehicles using a hand held antenna. You bet, I checked them out the first one I saw doing that, when you've got radios you gotta be curious huh.

Last time I met with the FCC regarding unlicensed users on a police freq the dude showed up in a blue sedan with a service monitor in the console and the antennas hidden in the car's headliner.

The last time I saw some people using handheld yagi antenna's and obviously looking and listening for something, I asked them point blank. They were tracking electronic tags on seals up the coast near Monterey, California...... Coulda been seal checkers...:):):)

Wonder why nobody wants to tag sharks?

Yeah it will be interesting to see what, if any, outcome involving this matter will be.

About what Kirk said about being on property. It was municipal property they were on so that would not be a concern. They were standing on the right of way of a school by the curb.

After speaking to this person again, he reiterated the guys said they were "following up on complaints of illegal radio operation."

He also mentioned they seemed reluctant to even speak to him.

There has been MANY Hams ticked off at some cb operators for bleeding over to ham freq's and also freebanding on 26.675. Check it out some day when skip is rolling. Almost everyday you will here a local group talking on it and they alledgedly have big amps.

Some of the guys around here want to run a kilowatt to talk ten miles across town.

If the Fcc is truly here,...there is no wonder.
