possible stupid question:

I just got a Cobra 75 WX, which setup wise is perfect for me, so i'd rather keep this radio if at all possible. My only problem is background noise! The soundtracker does little if anything to silence it, so the only way i know to get rid of it is to turn up the squelch, but that also cuts down on most of the transmissions i get. Im getting a fairly constant S5 of just background noise. Now on my old Uniden, i could fix this by adjusting the RF gain, and all was well. So my question is, is there a way to add this function? From my limited knowledge, im guessing it just adds resistance to the antenna line, so i dont see why it couldnt be a seperate box between the CB and antenna. So please, any comments\suggestions on this would be much apprieciated.
Thanks,
Matthew Puckett

Matthew,

This in no way directly answers your question but I thought I would reply just the same.

I,like you, tried to get all I could out of, lets say, standard cb's for lack of a better way of saying it. After playing around with two different radios, including a Galaxy Dx959, doing mods etc trying to get the performance I wanted, when it was all said and done, I still did not have what I was looking for.

I heard so much about the President Lincoln I thought I would check them out. I did and I finally bought one. I am glad I did. This is about as close to the ultimate radio for cb use you could ask for.

Again, I know this did not answer your post, but if you decide to just get the top radio and be finally completely satisfied, check out the Pres. Lincoln on Coppers web site.

Matthew,rf gain pot is attached to chassis ground and base or emitter of first transistor in reciever strip,it's an adjustable preamp so to speak. If you are certain you want to do this you should take it to a competant tech ,unless you think you can do this mod.Remember the forgoing was just an example some modern reciever strips have been shrunk to just an ic-chip.

matt

I have the same radio and your is about like mine.
The reciever is po-po and the tracker is a slacker.
To get rf gain adjustment would require placeing a pot to control the gain in the rf amp ckt at best this would be tricky.
This is a good radio for LITTLE cars like the one im driving now but if you have any room at all there are MUCH better radios out there. Sorry but i think your not going to be happy with this set its just not a high end radio at all.

matt,
the 1st problem here is that if you had a small attenuator box between the antenna and radio, you would also end up attenuating your tx. that is unless you had it electronically/relay switched in and out of line when you press the ptt.
the 2nd problem comes with it not being switched out of circuit. if it is not heavy duty enough, it would burn out as soon as you keyed the radio.

and if you tried to hard wire a control in, you would have to engineer it so it would be compeletely uncoupled from the rf amp. in other words it could not interfere with the rf amp operation in any way other than reducing its gain. that would be impossible by just running wires from a pot to the rf amp.
