nitemare,

Well if you have a "brain fart" like I did and did NOT turn Radio and Amp "OFF" when un-hooking coax to change to another Radio, and I was holding the coax in my left hand, and accidentally hit mic and keyed it then yep it is OWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Time.

Been 5 going on 6 weeks now and hole in palm of left hand is finally healing.

But Stray Electricial currant can come thru coax in storm.

Now I am useing the PolyPhasers and will never have to worry about un-hooking it ever again when storm's roll thru.

And I have also learned to TURN POWER OFF to EQUIPMENT when changing Coax in house.

You were probably zapped by a static surge. Those are bad for your radio too. I had the receiver blown in my RCI 5054DX and had to send it to be repaired. Might want to check on some protection, like those Polyphasers!

An RF burn is different. More current passes through you than a typical static discharge. Most of the time you will have a really slow healing burn that may extend the entire path of where you shorted out. The bad part is the burn is just as bad below the skin or worse than what is visible. RF and microwave energy can damage even dense tissue like bone that rarely burns from heat. Don't play around with antennas on those big mobile shootout setups, if someone keys up, you can get a serious injury!

Some of this radio equipment that doesn't have a grounded type 3 prong cord, can be plugged in the wrong way, and the case of the equipment will have voltage, you want notice it just touching the equipment without also touching a ground. Your coax is hooked to the equipment, so the voltage is on the shield of your coax also, when you take the coax loose, you can see or feel the current. You can check it with a meter, sometimes on the older equipment it will be near 120 volts. I've had some of the Galaxy bases that will have current on the case also if they've had a lightning or power surge and it burns out the protection resistors on the power in cord. They will still work, and you want notice the current untill you touch it with a ground. You can handle AC voltage without any shock as long as you don't get a ground. We use to change out stuff hot all time, but you wore the right kind of shoes, and worked on something not conductive.

I've seen a 2" mini lightning bolt jump off an unterminated 3.5" heliax on 600' FM antenna before in a light breeze. It's cool but will jolt the heck outta you if you let it.

nitemare,

Tell her to just call you BF for short, that way if your friends come over and she says "HEY BF!"

You can tell them quietly that it stands for "BRAINY FELLOW" as thinks you are so smart.

The 1st Sargant is still laughing.

When I got out of the military, I went to work for a company that redone radio shacks. All new wiring, new equipment and then we had to go to sea with for a week to make sure everything worked and get the bugs out. One of the huge (anyway it seemed huge) transmitters wasn't working right, so I went to the switch panel and turned the switch that was susposed to switch it to a different transmitter so no one cold key it up while I was checking it out. Lo and behold, someone had mis-labled the switch, and when I came to and thirteen stitches later I was looking for someone to kill and throw overboard. BAD STUFF!!! Unit199, Harve

Accident!! Was mowing the grass around the antenna and tripped on a root and fell into the antenna!!! OUCH.
But luck was with me as there was a mock disaster drill going on with plenty of medical around!!!!
