Nightmare

FACT

The gain of a antenna ( if it is tuned correctly ) is dependant on

1) the number of elements

2) the boom length

Jogunn please come clean how do you measure audio gain ??? how come you do not publish the patterns your antennas generate?

I hound Jogunn because they simply tell lies ... there is no strech the truth you are not getting what you think your paying for.

Here is a random 4 elm 10 meter beam ( cushcraft )
Model A4S
3dB Beamwidth, Degrees E-Plane 58
Boom Lenght ft.(m) 18(5.48)
Forward Gain, dBi 8.9
Frequency, MHz 28
Front to Back Ratio, dB 25
No. Elements 4 )

Well i guess ill say a few things to get my story out about Joe Gun. Their claims are not only bogus but downright STUPID!!!! I called the company and was told (this was in 1994) that the audio gain was actually the affect that the elemments had on the modulation precentage out of the radio into the beams elementns!!!! ARGH! That aside i DID at one time own a set( i wanted to see if they were what they claim) of gunns and i hated them. They are a pain in the arse to put together, pain to tune, and they weigh a ton, the mast mount was a corny piece of 2" pipe painted red with holes drilled in it. I never put them up instead i sold them and got another set of avanti moonraker 4's that are still up and talking to this very day! Jo Gunn is a joke................

They told someone that the THICKNESS of the elements increased the audio ....GASP! I dont like CBers being riped off by people who take advantage of the fact most cb users realy dont understand how antennas work and like most consumers go by the spect sheet. I have stated for years there needs to be a standard that all antennas will be measured too...... and let the gain facts for each be at least facts not jogunn fiction.

Kirk, how did you like that five star jogunn. I knew a guy years ago that ran one, man he was loud on the thing, but you know how that goes, it takes more than the antenna to really be loud. I've always known their gain claim was greatly inflated, but one thing you gotta say about them, they are well build. This guy that had the 5 star lost his tower to wind, the antenna caught the whole thing, it stuck into the mud, and all the damage it had was a couple bent elements, and they were not bad. Its still being used now by another person. The reason he lost his tower, his guys were ski rope that had rotted, the ground was really wet in the river bottom where he lived, he had a pretty good sized concrete pad under the tower, but it wasn't in the ground very deep, the wind just turned it over, pad and all. scrapiron

Aw come on, all you JoGunn bashers, coming out of the closet!! I am not as experienced as all of you, but I have owned a PDL II, a Maaco 103, and numerous other antennas. I presently have a JoGunn 4 element beam up, and it works great. Great rejection, and I get really good reports from it. The mast is 2" square tubing, and I like the fact that it screws together instead of using those cheesy hose clamps. Of course I didnt expect what they advertise, I expected to get the performance that a 4 element beam can give, and that is what I got. Lighten up! Just how many products actually perform up to their advertising? Dont we all take advertising with a grain of salt? Well then JoGunn's advertising is no different.

I agree that they are built a bit heavier duty than some I have run across. I think they are actually over-kill to be honest. Being so riged is not always a good thing though, as I am reminded when I look up at my IMAX. I liked the hardware, I liked the 2" square boom, but it was heavy and cumbersome to hoist up. On the performance side, I found it really no better [transmit] than my shooting star. Much worse side-reject and back reject was almost nill as compaired to my shooting star. I sold it to a friend for half what I paid, he experienced about the same. All in all, I paid too much for what I got and learned a very valuable lesson. If I did it again, I would buy either a Maco 4 element or go with a Cushcraft 12 meter and cut to size and use an az/el rotor to rotate and flip (I mentioned this in a different post). Although expensive, I would choose that route again as opposed to dual polarity beams.

Pig040, I've got a friend also that has the Jogunn 4 element like yours, its up about 70 feet, does a good job for a small beam, has good rejection. I helped him put it up about 4 years ago, he bought it used, its been around this country for 20 years or better, but still is solid as a rock. I think everyone that's owned it liked it ok, you know how CB'ers are, just like to trade, try something different. It was easy to put together, the boom is drilled for the elements, so you can't mess up on spacing, the elements are pre-drilled also. They could have done a better job on the coax connection, maybe they have on the later ones.

Pig

Jogunn needs to come clean ...........

As to proform to spect ok cushcraft, hygain, mosley and even MFJ again im waiting for AUDDDDDIO gain on any antenna it not a matter of bashing it a matter of truth or at least lieing the same way the others do. ANYONE looking to buy a beam look at ham antennas gain will be the same on 2 meters or 11 meters if a 3 elm 2 meter beam is 7DBD a 11 meter beam will be to NOT 22db NOT 60 db f/b not 70 db f/s and nada for audio gain.

Now i had a gizmachy 5 element and it worked pretty decent on gain and rejection plus the antenna practically weighed nothing. Only gripe i had was it was really narrow banded.. Go about ch 40 and below ch 1 and watch the SWR skyrocket!!!!

The coax connection on those beans pretty much is a couple of screws. You have to strip the coax and braid to attache to the antenna and that part SUCKS!!! They need to install regular connectors like on normal beams...

RCI, some manufacturers do that on Ham antennas. My Mosley is connected the very same way. Although it is exposed (suggestion to use "coax-seal" or the like), I think it's a more solid coonnection. No chance for a bad soldier job or connection not tight enough.

If the FCC will go after the aftermarket cell phone manunufacturers who sell bogus shields that claim to protect the face from RF while holding a cell phone, then why won't the FCC go after Jo-Gunn to clean up their act?

JoGunn's problem is not an fcc thing, it is an advertising thing, if the govt went after everyone who used misleading advertising, lots of businesses would be in trouble. I am surprised about what you said Kirk, because the JoGunn I have up has good side rejection, better than the other beams I have had. I do agree that the coax connectors are kind of wierd, but it does make for a good, poitive contact. Bruce, stop sticking pins in your JoGunn doll, haha.

I own a Jo Gunn ll I've had it up about a 1 1/2 years on a tower by the garage, where i have a set up.I'm not to happy with it a times.

The antenna had problems on the horizontial side only.Well after the fifth time of having it up and down we thought we had it figured out. However the last two ran falls we had up here the horizontal still wants to have problems.Maybe there's a fracture in the gamma match.

I also have called JoGunn not to happy with there so called engineers.I't must have been to close to closing time, so that might have been the reason why they hung up on me.Also have e-mailed them but i'm always told to call them and ask my question.

I dont claim to know everything and maybe some of my posting have been stupid but i have a maco 3-element that i put up almost 2years ago.I have the best swrs that a person could ask for.Same goes for my I-max2000 which has been up about 1year.This is what I have for use in the house.

Well I guess I'm not to impressed with JoGunn!

My 4x4 jo gunn star was a pain to tune. I couldnt get an swr below a 1.9-1 on the verticle side and the horizontal side i could only get a 2.5 to 1!!!!!!! I tuned that sucker for 3 hours straight before i gave up and pack it back in the box and got out my moonraker 4 and put it up with a great SWR! What a joke....... I sold the gunn for 200.00 to a local CB shop... He tried to tune it and had the very same problems i had and resold it for the same price i sold it to him.. Funny thing is the guy that finally bought it actually replaced the gammas and built the antenna up his way and from what i hear he got a great SWR on it! I think for the average CB guy Gunn should use regular coax connectors instead of attaching the coax to the gammas via braids....

I did call JO-GUNN and this time I talked to a nice lady.Yes she asked me the same questions about sealing the gamma-match and checking the swrs. Also if I switched the horizontial and vertical gamma-match which I did not do.

I did tell her that I had the anteena up and down five times.Maybe this helped her to tell that I was'nt a A-CLOWN.

She sent me a new gamma-match for the horizontial side.Hope to put it on this spring.

I hope this corrects the problem and I can be 100% happy.

I also have to say that they did not charge me for the gamma-match.To me this refelcts that if its made in America they stand behind it!!!!!!

Gage I bought a MFJ 10-40 vertical one of the brackets cracked they sent me a replacememt no problem ..... My experance with hygain cushcraft mosley and hustler have all been positive. In fact in 40 years of buying using building antennas i cant think of any which did not back what they sold.
