WHY DO THEY NOT ALLOW FRS AND GMSR MOBLE AND BASE COMBO'S. I WAS IN WALMART THE OTHER DAY AND SAW ONE OF THE HAND HELDS WHICH STATED 5W 7 MILE RANGE. JUST THINK IF THEY WOULD ALLOW A GOOD MOBLE BASE ANT. SETUP WHAT RANGE YOU COULD GET OUT OF THAT TYPE RADIO.

How can Radio Shack sell one model of FRS with a small magnet mount ant. is not this a violation of the rules concerning FRS radio?

Without going back to actually look at the rule, I thought it said that the antenna attached to the radio at manufacture could not be replaced and that the antenna could not be a gain antenna. Otherwise I don't remember there being a restriction on the type of antenna (i.e. rubber duck, molded in plastic or coax connected magmount). By the way, I saw one of those radios at a shack once. I think the antenna was not detachable from the radio; unless you cut the coax.

Radio shack sold that because the antenna AND transciever portion were located in one unit, only the speaker/mic and controls were located away from transmitter/reciever portion. That was how they skirted on that one.

freebander, your stagename/handle suggests that you do not mind bending the rules if not just flat out breaking them. you can find a progrmmable business band radio or a modifiable ham radio all almost anywhere that will give you plenty of frs/gmrs power. and it is already set up for an external antenna.

there are game wardens in -some- states doing this already. many hunters are using frs/gmrs freqs because they think that the g.wardens are only monitoring cb. not anymore, their county radios are programmed to -monitor- frs/gmrs.(rx only, you know these guys aren't going to break any rules, we all know law enforcement would never to that)

In reply to your question of range. Using the link of gxz I read where the operational frequency is in the 154 mhz territory. That is VHF and very similar in propogation to that used by 2 meter ham ops.

There is no skip when you are in this frequency range other than something called Thermal Ducting and that is not a common/daily thing. The normal radiation pattern is Line of Sight with distance only a little past the horizon. This of course means that this talking distance varies with the height of the antenna--the higher the better.

BUT do not expect improvement over HF CB frequencies. What you will get is a more reliable and clear local signal.

As to your question on the FRS/GMRS radios. If a radio has the GMRS on it it must be licensed by the FCC. Period. The license only costs (yes you have to PAY MONEY for this one) 75 bucks or there about. You are NOT permitted to modify the radios.

If you get a radio that has just FRS aka Family Radio Service only then there is no license required but you CANNOT modify the equipment. The range is usually shorter than GMRS due to reduced power output.
