Astronomers Amazed at Two Huge Sunspots
"Astronomers can't remember the last time this happened: two Jupiter-sized sunspots crossing the face of the Sun at the same time," according to the NASA-run web site Spaceweather.com

The stormy space weather comes as the Sun is actually in a declining mode of activity. An 11-year solar cycle peaked during 2001 and 2002. Sunspots are fewer now and activity will ramp down during the next three to four years. But, scientists say, isolated severe space weather can occur at any time.

"It’s somewhat unusual to have this much activity when we’re approximately three-and-a-half years past solar maximum," said Larry Combs, a forecaster with the NOAA Space Environment Center’s Space Weather Operations. "In fact, just last week, solar activity was very low with an almost spotless Sun."

The Sunspot Phenomenon
There is a phenomenon known as the sunspot cycle that affects radio communication. The sun goes through 11 year cycles.

During the 11 year cycles peak, eruptions of solar energy increase. Particles from these eruptions travel to Earth and energize the Earth's atmosphere.

The increased solar activity ionizes the upper levels of the Earth's atmosphere. The upper layers of the atmosphere become reflective to certain wavelengths of radio waves.

When this happens, your four watt CB's signal can travel (skip) over 2,500 miles. The condition fades at night. We are currently at the end of cyle 23.

I was listening on the 6M today, off and on. It was dead here too. But, I thought there was supposed to be this big radio transmission problem today (Friday, October 24, 2003) from the Solar sunspot activity?

I have had my Hallicrafters S-53 on 6m listening for an opening (actually, I just want to listen for Bruce). Dead as dead can be.

Some occasional local traffic droning on and on about surgeries and other typical old fart dialogue.

Last night 6 was open for a good while here. I started hearing stations around 8pm, most participating in the sprint. It turned out to be a good one from what I heard on the air. Gave my #'s to a few guys then drifted up to the .14's and .15's where there were some actual conversations.

Another giant solar flare/CME today at 6am. The biggest in 14 years, which makes it as big as stuff that was happening at the peak of Cycle 22. X18 class as opposed to the X3 last week. Aimed almost directly at Earth. We should be in for some serious conditions,.

That must be why I had to turn up the squelch on the radio for the first time today. I must have had 30 people all talking at once. For awhile there, I also had a police frequency coming in too...

Let's hear it for SUN SPOTS! bobman3

I saw it on the news today. Some incredible pictures, then.....the wind starting howling here and I watched my antenna began to slowly fall down. A Norther is blowing through, and my antenna has quite the rough angle going.

Skip was rolling hard but with this windstorm, and fears it might yank my coax through the window setup I custom made, I disconnected all and am missing out. Oh well, just finally got power back after about 4 hours of being out and at least we have that and water again.

Time to re-rig, and that blows during a major solar flare happening!

Local paper here says to expect widespread communication outtages. Potential for Satellites to shut down, the astronauts are hiding in a radiation proof section, microwave transmission to die, and power transformers to blow up.....

This is beginning to sound like Y2K......

So does everyone have their radio turned off?

My 5054 will be alert for openings as soon as I get home from work!

I will be calling on the CEF net freq and on 6 meters on 50.135!

Also, looks like those of us in the south may see aurora tonight!
