Hey y'all, can anybody tell me what pots are used on my Midland 79-290 to adjust power output? I would like to turn the dead key down, and let the dual finals have a little more oomph both on AM and SSB. Also, could anybody tell me exactly if the ALC does indeed control the swing on AM. I have been under the impression that it does, but if someone could clarify that for me I would be thankful. SO far as I assume then, Adjust one of the pots for deadkey, right? THen the ALC for swing power on AM, right? THen the other pot for swing on SSB, correct? Any info that any of you could give me on this subject for this radio will be greatly appreciated.

Midland 79-290 Adjustment's:
AMC ~ Adjust: VR11
ALC ~ Adjust: VR8
AM POWER ~ Adjust: VR3
Adjust ~ L10, T9, T12, T11,

It's a dual fianl radio, but doesn't have too much punch. The radio will only peak about 15-18 watts |

could you tell me which pot is vr11-vr8-vr3,as they are not numbered on the board

Ok, guys here is what I found. Skilletlicker, the pots are numbered, but the numbers are under the pots on the board and it is hard as heck to see them, but you can tilt the radio around to see them. Well, I adjusted the pots and the L things as intstructed and managed to get a 9 watt dead key with a swing up around 10 or 11 I believe. It's kinda hard to tell on swing. On sideband it didn't seem to make too much difference, but with a loud whistle it would swing up around 15 or so. But that's about it. VR11 and VR8 didn't seem to do anything at all regardles of where they were set. I had a modulation and a power meter and tried both AM and SSB and they didn't seem to affect either of them, of course this was the first time I have ever tried this. But it was fun!!! Keepitreal118 was correct on the 15-18 watts, as I am sure that is about all it is. But heck I guess that is better than nothing. I think I am going to set it to run wiht the Palomar 250 and drop my dead key down. According to what I have read here, about 2 watts dead key right? That will prevent the signal from distorting correct? I am going to do this tonight so wish me luck. And by the way, Tech 808, you were absolutley right in what you e-mailed me, darn you're good!!

tech307 sent me a link i downloaded it and got a good picture of the board marked with the pots that i needed to adjust.i adjusted it to where it swings to about 11 and added a power mic it sounds almost as loud as mt 88 galaxy,i tried adjusting the receive but i dont think i helped much.i used a voltmeter acroos the speaker leads but no voltage showed i wonder if i have a bad meter
you can find the down load under ask the tech,under modulation 79290 it will put out about 12 watts but i would rather have the modulation then wattage,i was in the mobile this morning and my xyl was talking on the 79-290 and it sounded great now if someone can tell me how to adjust the recieve i wiil be hunky dory
